If you thought being a student was hard, try being a teacher! After reinventing the legal ensemble genre with his Emmy Award-winning series "Ally McBeal" and "The Practice," multi-Emmy, Golden Globe and Peabody Award-winner David E. Kelley now sets his sights on high school with Boston Public. Kelley's newest series explores the personal and professional lives of teachers and administrators working at a mid-size high school in Boston. And with this prolific producer's penchant for controversial, topical and eye-opening storylines, Boston Public will have viewers wishing they were back in school, or being thankful that they're not.

With athletes graduating high school and signing seven-figure professional contracts, 25-year-old Internet billionaires, and high school dropouts winning fortunes on game shows, has the $42,000-a-year teacher become an anachronism, struggling to command respect from jaded students and succeed-at-all-cost parents? Boston Public gives an up-close, behind-the-scenes, dramatic and sometimes comedic look into the lives of teachers and administrators at Winslow High -- focusing on their constant battle to create an atmosphere with "teaching" as the primary goal.

Heading the school is Steven Harper (Chi McBride), the strong, formidable Principal. In his mid-40s, Harper is a no-nonsense, strict believer in the school's obligation to make students smarter and better. One minute he's confronted by the hot-headed father of a failing football player; the next minute he's giving boxing tips to a beleaguered student. Lauren Davis (Jessalyn Gilsig), in her late-20s, is the head of the Social Studies department and is always moving from one dilemma to the next -- from battling with students to dodging advances from a fellow administrator.

The other teachers and administrators include: Harvey Lipschultz (Emmy Award-winner Fyvush Finkel), an 80-year-old History teacher who longs for the respectful students of years past; Scott Guber (Anthony Heald), the fortysomething Vice Principal, stern and intense (referred to as "The Nazi" by students), who has a soft spot for Lauren; and Milton Buttle (Joey Slotnick), the English teacher students like to tease...either behind his back or right to his face.

Also on the faculty are Kevin Riley (Thomas McCarthy), the handsome thirtysomething new football coach who got the high-profile job following the death of the previous coach; Marylin Sudor (Sharon Leal), the late-20s Music teacher who is also friends with Lauren; Harry Senate (Nicky Katt), a cocky Geology teacher in his late-20s known for using his own unusual teaching methods rather than the tried and true; Marla Hendricks (Loretta Devine), the mid-40s Special Education teacher who often finds "sanity in a bottle" of medication; and Louisa (Rashida Jones), the beautiful and young school Secretary/Assistant to the Principal.

When the school bell rings at the end of each day, the faculty of Winslow High may be grateful just to have survived -- no one overdosed, no one used a gun. And maybe, just maybe, someone learned something.

Boston Public is a David E. Kelley Production in association with 20th Century Fox Television. David E. Kelley is creator/executive producer; Jonathan Pontell is co-executive producer.
