Trial set for W.Va. inmate in drug case charged with escaping from federal prison

Reported by: Associated Press
Sunday, July 13, 2014 12:29 PM EDT
CLARKSBURG, W.Va.

A September trial is set for an inmate charged with escaping from a federal prison in Morgantown.

Eugene Cobbs was arrested in Mexico last month. He is charged with escaping from FCI Morgantown on April 10, 2013.

The 43-year-old Cobbs crashed a small plane carrying $24 million worth of cocaine in Wheeling in 2004. He fled then and was captured in Mexico in 2008. He was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for conspiracy to distribute and for flying without an airman's certificate.

Online court records show Cobbs pleaded not guilty to the escape charge on Friday. His trial is set for Sept. 9 in federal court in Clarksburg.

If convicted of escape, Cobbs faces an additional five years in prison.
