MARRIED PRIEST
Married West Virginia man will be ordained Roman Catholic priest this month

WHEELING, W.Va.

A former Episcopal priest who is married will be ordained this month as a priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.

James Conyers has served at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Ronceverte since last July, when he was ordained a transitional deacon by Bishop Michael Bransfield.

The diocese says Conyers and his wife, Deborah, wanted to become Catholic in 2007. He contacted the diocese about the Pastoral Provision. The 1980 dispensation from Pope John Paul II applies to former Episcopal clergy.

More than 100 men in the U.S. have become Catholic priests through the process since 1983. Conyers will be the first in West Virginia.

An ordination ceremony for Conyers is scheduled for June 28 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling.
