Reported by: Associated Press
Thursday, June 5, 2014 6:06 PM EDT
PANTHER, W.Va.

The Panther area of McDowell County has been hit by flash flooding.

Media outlets report that the McDowell County Commission issued a state of emergency Thursday for the Panther area. No injuries have been reported.

Angela Robinette, deputy director of the county's Office of Emergency Services, says flooding started around 5 a.m. She says more than 20 structures have been severely damaged and several vehicles destroyed. Most residents chose not to evacuate, but two families left their damaged homes to stay with relatives.

Highway crews worked to clear debris and mud from roads.

Resident Mike Roberts said the flooding is the worst he has seen in 25 years.
