INSTITUTE, W.Va.

West Virginia State University has received a $325,000 federal grant to upgrade its science research equipment.

The funding from the U.S. Defense Department allows the university to buy a liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer for student and faculty research.

The instrument will aid the study of methods in environmental remediation, fruit nutrition and tumor growth.

Assistant chemistry professor Micheal Fultz says the instrument will allow for the separation of complex mixtures in order to analyze their components down to the molecular level.
