West Virginia's teachers unions are pushing for a pay raise to make teachers' salaries competitive with those in surrounding states.
He says the WVEA hopes Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin will include a plan in his State of the State address on Wednesday to ensure that West Virginia can recruit and retain the best teachers.
The president of the American Federation of Teachers West Virginia branch, Christine Campbell, says young teachers are leaving the state because of the lack of competitive pay. She says another factor is a lack of help in the classroom.
More than 40 county boards of education have endorsed a competitive teacher pay resolution.
