The state Board of Education has returned partial control of Gilmer County's school system.
The board voted in June 2011 to take over supervision of the county's schools after a performance audit cited problems.
The state Office of Education Performance Audits conducted a follow-up check in November and recommended continued state intervention over personnel, facilities and financial decisions regarding facility expenses.
The audits office recommended also that the state board establish an exit agreement so that the county can regain full control of the school system.
School systems that remain under state intervention are in Grant, Fayette, Mingo and Preston counties.
