A prosecutor charged in a widespread federal investigation in a southern West Virginia county is resigning.
Sparks' lawyer, Kent Varney, tells media outlets that the prosecutor also will surrender his law license.
Sparks was charged Wednesday in a federal information with conspiracy. He's accused of participating in a scheme to protect Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum from revelations the sheriff had bought drugs from a campaign sign-maker.
Crum was killed in April in an unrelated shooting.
Sparks says in his letter that he made a mistake in judgment and he accepts the consequences. He says his attempt to protect Crum's reputation and drug enforcement efforts was unjustifiable.
