U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin has asked the Food and Drug Administration for information in response to allegations that pharmaceutical companies paid to be involved in panel discussions on federal regulations for prescription painkillers.
Manchin's letter asks for details of the meetings, a list of companies involved and the amounts they paid to attend.
The newspaper said it obtained emails from two medical professors who set up a panel to advise the FDA on clinical trials for painkillers.
An FDA spokesman says the agency will respond directly to Manchin.
