Two West Virginia state legislators and a school superintendent are back from a workshop in Denver on preventing childhood obesity.
The West Virginia team developed five recommendations, including strengthening a 10-year-old program that takes health measurements of fifth graders and offers health improvement advice to their families. The team says the Cardiac Program is largely responsible for an 8.6 percent decrease in the state's childhood obesity rate since 2005.
Other recommendations included counting breakfast eaten in the classroom as instructional time, devoting more time for physical activity during the school day, rewarding innovative ideas to reduce obesity and supporting efforts to include more healthy foods on school menus.
