WorkForce West Virginia asks federal workers to delay filing jobless claims until next week
Reported by: Associated Press
Thursday, October 3, 2013 8:00 AM EDT
WorkForce West Virginia is asking federal workers furloughed by a partial government shutdown to hold off on filing for unemployment benefits.
The agency says it will backdate claims up to 21 days after a worker is laid off.
Acting unemployment compensation director Beth Carenbauer tells the Charleston Daily Mail that the agency already has received about 30 claims from federal workers.
She says the agency has increased staff to process an expected rise in claims next week.
WorkForce estimates there are 23,000 federal employees in West Virginia.
But Carenbauer says many may be deemed essential.
