Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Tuesday, May 6, 2014 5:57 AM EDT
JUBA, South Sudan

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has arrived in South Sudan to apply more pressure on the government and rebels to end their war.

Moon's visit Tuesday comes four days after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir leading to Kiir announcing that he is ready for talks with the rebel leader, former Vice President Riek Machar. Government troops over weekend attacked the rebel-held city of Bentiu, the capital of Unity State and the rebel strong-hold of Nasir, in the Upper Nile state.

Ariane Quentier, spokeswoman of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, said Moon will call on the parties involved in the war in South Sudan to implement the cessation of hostilities agreement they signed on Jan. 23.
