AP-VENEZUELA-TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS UPDATE
Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Friday, January 24, 2014 3:24 PM EST
Tempers have flared today at airline offices in Venezuela's capital. People are reacting with anger to the refusal of international carriers to sell tickets.
The offices of American Airlines, United and Panama's Copa were all either closed or had stopped sales today as the higher exchange rate took effect.
The rate change comes as carriers try to collect $3.3 billion they say they are owed by Venezuela's socialist government. They say the money is trapped inside Venezuela by rigid currency controls.
For now, the travel plans of millions of Venezuelans are in doubt.
