Officials say fierce clashes are underway between Iraqi special forces and al-Qaida-linked militants outside the besieged western city of Fallujah.
Two provincial officials and an army officer confirmed the fighting. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to talk to media.
Iraqi security forces and allies from Sunni tribes have been battling militants to recapture Fallujah and Ramadi, the two key cities in the western Anbar province.
An al-Qaida-linked group, known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, last week overran and took control of Fallujah's center and parts of Ramadi.
