Bahrain reduces police officers' sentences in media executive torture death case

A lawyer in Bahrain says an appeals court has reduced the prison terms for two police officers convicted in the fatal torture of a prominent opposition media executive during crackdowns in the tense Gulf nation.
The decision Sunday to lower the sentences from seven years to three years comes less than a week after the same reduction was made for a police officer convicted of shooting to death a protester in the early days of Bahrain's Shiite-led uprising in February 2011.
The latest appeals court move could spark fresh clashes in Bahrain, which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.
