MURDER-EXONERATION FUND
Fund raises thousands for NYC man cleared of murder after 25 years; stranger set up campaign

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Thursday, April 17, 2014 2:11 AM EDT
NEW YORK

A recently exonerated New York man who spent nearly 25 years behind bars for a killing that happened while he was at Disney World is getting help from dozens of well-wishers contributing to an online fund for him.

About 70 people gave a total of more than $3,400 to the campaign for Jonathan Fleming by Wednesday.

Fleming was released last week after a judge dismissed the 1989 case, with Brooklyn prosecutors' assent.

They reviewed authorities' files and found documents backing Fleming's Florida alibi. His defense team located witnesses who implicated someone else, and a key eyewitness recanted.

Finance executive Alex Sutaru says he read about Fleming's exoneration and decided to launch a fund to help the 51-year-old rebuild his life. Fleming's lawyers are aware of the effort and are welcoming it.
