CHARLOTTE MAYOR
NC senator to replace Charlotte mayor who resigned in bribery scandal after 6 months in office

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Monday, April 7, 2014 6:54 PM EDT
CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Charlotte, N.C.'s council has chosen a state senator to be the city's new mayor to replace Patrick Cannon, who resigned last month in a public corruption scandal.

Members on Monday picked Dan Clodfelter to finish the two-year term Cannon only started in December.

Cannon resigned less than two weeks ago after being arrested on federal corruption charges. Federal prosecutors say Cannon accepted more than $48,000 in bribes from FBI agents posing as businessmen who wanted to work with North Carolina's largest city.

Council members have been deadlocked for more than a week on who should be the city's next mayor. Clodfelter is a business lawyer who was on the city council before being elected to the General Assembly in 1998. He is a Democrat like Cannon.
