Iran ambassador dispute unites Dem, GOP senators on legislation to deny visa
Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Monday, April 7, 2014 4:11 PM EDT
The congressional outcry over allowing a former hostage-taker involved in the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran to serve as Iran's ambassador at the United Nations has created an odd political couple.
The bill was prompted by Iran's anticipated selection of Hamid Aboutalebi to be the next Iranian ambassador to the United Nations. Aboutalebi was a member of a Muslim student group that held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.
The Obama administration has objected but stopped short of saying it would refuse Aboutalebi a visa to enter the country.
