Federal prosecutors in Rhode Island are asking for a sentence of more than 10 years for the mastermind of a kickback scheme that lasted 15 years and cost the U.S. Navy millions of dollars.
Mariano, a civilian employee of the Navy, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy, theft of government property and tax evasion. He is one of six people convicted in the case.
Prosecutors say Mariano spent the money on gambling vacations and $100,000 worth of luxury cigars, among other things.
Sentencing is next week.
