Major San Francisco Bay-area transit strike averted at least for day as sides keep talking
Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Monday, October 14, 2013 12:29 PM EDT
San Francisco Bay Area rapid trains are running Monday morning after the transit agency and two of its largest unions agreed to extend contract talks over the weekend to avoid a strike.
The 11th-hour announcement came after weekend-long talks to avert a second commute-crippling strike in less than three months.
BART says it has presented the unions with its "last, best and final offer" that they say includes a raise of 3 percent a year over four years.
The unions warned they will go on strike at midnight Monday if an agreement isn't reached by then.
