I CONSUMER QUILTING
AS EYEWITNESS NEWS ANCHOR JENIFER MCANDREWS FOUND-- EVEN THOSE WHO YOU THINK ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS COULD END UP BETRAYING YOU.
A QUILTING GROUP HARDLY SEEMS LIKE THE SETTING FOR A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR SCAM. BUT THAT'S WHERE KATHERINE O'KEEFE WAS TARGETED.
"Our relationship went from women involved in this quilting group to extremely close friends. Neither of us had sisters. We very much regarded each other as sisters."
O'KEEFE IS TALKING ABOUT ROBIN BRASS, WHOM SHE MET IN THE QUILTING GROUP. OVER SEVERAL YEARS, THE TWO WOMEN BECAME SO CLOSE THEIR FAMILIES VACATIONED
BRASS CLAIMED TO HAVE A "CAN'T LOSE INVESTMENT FORMULA" AND O'KEEFE TRUSTED HER-NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
"On paper we certainly made money. We received continual statements. She would come to our house, sit down at our dining room table and go over our statements with us."
ABOUT A YEAR AND HALF LATER, EVERYTHING CHANGED.
"There were checks that had bounced… we accepted what seemed like plausible reasons for that. In retrospect should have been enormous flags to us."
POSTAL INSPECTORS SAY B-B-R WAS A FRONT FOR AN ELABORATE PONZI SCHEME THAT STOLE MORE THAN $2 MILLION DOLLARS FROM VICTIMS.
"When you think about what this suspect had to go through to gain the trust of all these professional, good people, "greed" comes to mind. Unfortunately - it is a powerful motivator."
I'M JENIFER MCANDREWS... EYEWITNESS NEWS.
BRASS' PONZI SCHEME - LIKE MOST - ONLY LASTED AS LONG AS SHE CONTINUED TO LURE IN NEW INVESTORS TO PAY OLD INVESTORS.
UNFORTUNATELY, KATHARINE O'KEEFE AND HER FRIENDS IN THE QUILTING GROUP WERE ON THE LOSING END OF THE PYRAMID.

INTRO MEN'S HEALTH
AND KEEPING DEAR OLD DAD HEALTHY SHOULD BE TOP PRIORITY...
DOCTORS SAY NOW IS THE TIME FOR MEN TO MAKE THEIR HEALTH A PRIORITY.
EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER DARRAH WILCOX HAS MORE IN THIS WEEK'S HEALTHY FOR LIFE.
AS PART OF NATIONAL MEN'S HEALTH WEEK, EXPERTS ENCOURAGE MEN TO BE PROACTIVE IN LIVING A HEALTHIER LIFE. THAT CAN BE AS SIMPLE AS JUST GOING IN FOR A CHECKUP.
"We get routine bloodwork to make sure a patient's cholesterol looks okay, make sure that their blood sugar, their electrolytes, kidney and liver function, seem to be okay."
Doctors can identify chronic diseases earlier, and then lay out treatment options.
"The biggest things we have to deal with are blood pressure problems, cholesterol problems, blood sugar problems, diabetes."
They not only handle those types of ongoing chronic medical conditions, but also screen men for other sorts of diseases, like prostate cancer or colon cancer.
"I try to make my patients feel as comfortable as possible you know understanding that most men don't like to come to the doctor, and if you recognize that fact and try to cater to that, then I think that that makes it easier to be seen on a regular, more frequent basis."
Here are five ways you can get on track to better health:
FIVE WAYS TO GET HEALTHIER:
*get more sleep
*toss out tobacco
get more sleep
toss out tobacco
And take that first step by going in for a simple checkup.
"Whether it just be one visit a year to make sure things look good, you're on track with general screening protocol, I think making that time for yourself and making that priority is probably the most important thing we can stress."
YOU CAN FIND OUT MORE MEN'S HEALTH TIPS ON WCHS TV DOT COM.

STATE OF JOBS
WHEN WILL WE FINALLY SEE MORE JOBS CREATED AND FEWER PEOPLE OUT OF WORK?
ACCORDING TO THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS 11-POINT-EIGHT MILLION PEOPLE REMAIN UNEMPLOYED.
AND THAT DOES NOT TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THOSE WHO'VE ABANDONED THE JOB MARKET OR ARE UNDEREMPLOYED.
WE ARE STILL NO WHERE NEAR WHERE WE NEED TO PUSH DOWN LEVELS OF UNEMPLOYMENT NOT SEEN SINCE THE START OF THE RECESSION FIVE YEARS AGO.
THINK FOR A MOMENT THAT THE ECONOMY IS A PATIENT IN THE HOSPITAL.
NO LONGER ON EMERGENCY ROOM LIFE SUPPORT BUT ON SOME DAYS STILL IN NEED OF CRITICAL CARE.
YES, THE HOUSING MARKET HAS REBOUNDED SOMEWHAT AND FEWER COMPANIES ARE LAYING OFF WORKERS THAN IN 2010 OR 2011..
BUT STEVEN ISBERG [PRONOUNCED IS-BERG] , A FINANCE EXPERT, SAYS AMERICA CAN'T DEPEND ON HOUSING CONSTRUCTION FOR NEW JOB GROWTH THE WAY IT DID BEFORETHE FINANCIAL COLLAPSE IN 2008.
SOT IN 21:37:12 "You keep hearing about well you get the housing market going again. Even the housing market won't do it because that's only about 15 percent of total construction jobs, and housing construction is at about half of what it was."
[LAYER IN 7.6%]
ONE OF THE FACTORS WHY UNEMPLOYMENT REMAINS STUCK AT SEVEN-POINT-SIX PERCENT.
[FRAZAO STANDUP ]
"THE CRUEL IRONY BEHIND THIS -- ACCORDING TO THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS-- THERE ARE MORE JOB OPENINGS RIGHT NOW -- THREE-POINT-SEVEN MILLION MORE THAN THERE ARE PEOPLE SEEKING JOBS. IN APRIL, ROUGHLY TWO-POINT-FOUR-MILLION PEOPLE WERE OUT OF WORK , LOOKING FOR A JOB."
THE NUMBER OF UNEMPLOYED MUST FALL BETWEEN FIVE AND SIX PERCENT, BEFORE, ECONOMISTS, SAY WE WILL SEE FULL RESTORATION OF THE LABOR MARKET.
AND TO GET THERE, THE U.S WOULD HAVE TO CREATE 250-THOUSAND JOBS A MONTH.
IN MAY, ONE OF THE STRONGEST MONTHS FOR HIRING, ONLY 175 THOUSAND NEW JOBS WERE CREATED.
IN 10:25:51 This year 2013, we will just tread water and go sideways possibly, but it maybe another two years before we see significant improvements."
ISBERG SAYS WITHOUT MORE ROBUST MANUFACTURING AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRIES , WE ARE LIKELY THREE YEARS, NOT TWO, AWAY FROM A FULL RECOVERY.
I'M KRISTINE FRAZAO REPORTING
WHERE'S THE BEST PLACE TO FIND WORK? ACCORDING TO THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS SERVICE INDUSTRIES SUCH AS TRANSPORTATION AND UTILITIES HAVE MORE THAN 700 HUNDRED THOUSAND OPEN JOBS RIGHT NOW.
LUNC CANCER SCREENING
MEDICAL REPORTER LIZ BONIS EXPLAINS WHY --IN TODAY'S MEDICAL EDGE.
DOUG HALL RECENTLY GOT A SCREENING TEST FOR EARLY DETECTION OF LUNG CANCER--
CALLED A A C-T SCAN.
DOCTOR SANDRA STARNES SAYS IT'S NOW SUGGESTED FOR THOSE WHO MEET SPECIFIC CRITERIA - TO SAVE LIVES:
2:19:15 The national lung cancer screening trial has shown that screening is beneficial for reducing lung cancer mortality with a low dose ct scan
DOUG MET THAT CRITERIA - AS A 30 YEAR - PACK SMOKER --
2:20:00 what that means is you smoke a pack a day for thirty years, and it doesn't matter when you quit
THE C-T SCAN IS ALSO SUGGESTED IF YOU ARE A 20 YEAR PACK SMOKER -WITH OTHER RISK FACTORS:
2:20:15 Like a strong family history, if you have other smoking related cancers such as bladder cancer, if you've had occupational exposure such as aspestos
DOUG HAD THE TEST --WHICH TAKES ABOUT TEN MINUTES -- AND GIVES HIM A COMPARISON IMAGE FOR YEARS TO FOLLOW --
tease us 2:33: 25/ stand up 2:35:17 in his case then, a whole team of people come together and reviewed those images,, they can then made recommendations for a treatment needed at that time,, and he is taking those recommendations.
2:25:57 based on this screening there is some concern that we're following up with, so i've been scared a little bit
2: 26:33 there is a small difference that is being investigated, so we are doing some further testing
TESTING HE KNOWS COULD SAVE HIS LIFE IF ANYTHING FURTHER IS FOUND WRONG.
I'M LIZ BONIS,, REPORTING.
THESE TESTS MAY OR MAY NOT BE COVERED BY MEDICAL INSURANCE PLANS -SOME RADIOLOGY OFFICES AND CANCER CENTERS ARE NOW OFFERING THEM TO PATIENTS FOR AS LITTLE AS 100 DOLLARS -IF THEY MEET THE SCREENING CRITERIA.
LUNG TRANSPLANT SURGERY

SARAH MURNAGHAN RECEIVED NEW LUNGS FROM AN ADULT DONOR AT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PHILADELPHIA ON WEDNESDAY.
THE FAMILY ISSUED A STATEMENT SAYING HER DOCTORS ARE VERY PLEASED WITH HER PROGRESS.
NOW DOCTORS ARE FOCUSED ON HER RECOVERY.
ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN SARAH'S RECOVERY MAY BE THE TIME IT TAKES FOR HER TO RECOVER.
THE MURNAGHAN FAMILY NOTED THAT THEIR DAUGHTER'S SURVIVAL.. IS THE RESULT OF ANOTHER FAMILIES LOSS.

MAN OF STEEL
IN TONIGHT'S SCREEN GEMS, EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER KENNIE BASS TELLS US IF "MAN OF STEEL" FLIES HIGH OR CRASHES TO EARTH.
But a new Superman is the star of "Man Of Steel." Written by David Goyer and directed by Zack Snyder. it retells Superman's origins from his birth on Krypton to growing up in Smallville to making his way to Metropolis.
Henry Cavill takes the title role. He's first shown as a helpful drifter, staying off of the radar while still helping people. A chance meeting with Lois Lane comes when he's first learning about home planet. That helps set him on the path to don a new blue and red suit and take to the skies.
Kennie Bass/Eyewitness News: Superman has been on Earth for more than three decades when a group of Kryptonian soldiers find him and demand he surrender. Led by Michael Shannon's General Zod they lay down the law. If Superman doesn't give himself up, the world will suffer.
Kennie Bass/Eyewitness News: I'm a huge Superman fan. I have been for years, so there are parts of this film that I loved. Krypton's new portrayal as a vibrant, action-packed world was a nice change. And Russell Crowe's Jor-El bears the weight of sacrificing his only son to save him.
Cavill fills out the suit nicely and gives a nuanced performance. His Clark isn't a bumbling nerd, he's more of a shadowy ghost who drifts from place to place staying anonymous. Amy Adams is feisty and strong as Lois Lane and Michael Shannon's Zod personifies the right amount of malice and danger.
Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are memorable as Jonathan and Martha Kent, who instill good morals into their son. But, some of the positive feelings about Costner's performance are wiped out by a decision he makes, one which I don't believe for a second the character would choose. It was forced and unnecessary.
In fact, that's my biggest complaint about "Man Of Steel." Much of it feels forced, from Clark and Lois' relationship to the massive destruction caused by Superman's battles against the would-be Kryptonian conquerors.
There is so little regard for human life, by anyone, that is just doesn't feel like Superman. While battling his foes, Kal-El doesn't take a second to consider the collateral damage, and that's just wrong. And, he's forced to make a choice near the end which lost me completely. The sheer magnitude of destruction is distracting. I found myself thinking, how many are people are dying during this fight? That's something I think Superman should be thinking about, too.
With very few exceptions, there isn't much joy in this movie. Which is a shame. Superman is about more than just flying and being strong. He's an ideal, which isn't characterized by "Man of Steel."
On my rating scale, "Man of Steel" earns a triple. It's a good movie with great action, but not nearly enough heart.
You can see it in the Charleston area at Marquee Cinemas at Southridge and in Huntington at Pullman Square.
