May 2, 2014 The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Studio: Sony Rating: PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action/violence.
In the second installment of the reboot of Marvel's web slinger, Andrew Garfield returns as the title character in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."
Emma Stone also reprises her role as Gwen Stacy, the woman who loves the web head and his alter ego, Peter Parker.
This time around Parker discovers he's been under surveillance by the giant company, Oscorp. This is the same place which produced the villain in his first movie, the Lizard.
And now, more shenanigans are afoot as Oscorp is the birthplace of yet another super villain, Jamie Foxx's Electro.
He's a mild-mannered engineer who idolizes Spider-Man. However, his feelings turn to anger as he feels abandoned and betrayed.
Meanwhile, Parker finds out that Oscorp is at the center of his problems. His childhood friend Harry (Dane DeHaan) is back. The son of Oscorp's founder takes over operations and has questions only Peter Parker can answer.
In the midst of trying to unravel the mystery surrounding the Oscorp and the death of his parent, Spider-Man still swings through the city, saving lives and trying to keep Gwen happy.
It all comes to a climax when Electro causes a city-wide blackout. Spider-Man and Gwen try to stop him, with an even more dangerous foe set to make a surprise appearance in the film's final stages.
There are many things to like about this movie. Garfield and Stone are perfect as the young lovers Peter and Gwen. They're funny and sarcastic and sincere. The chemistry between them is a a highlight of the film.
On the other side of the coin, Foxx and Dehaan are very good as the film's antagonists. At first friendly with Peter, they become unstable and hard to predict.
The special effects are, to borrow from the title, amazing.
Seeing Spider-Man do his thing, including several sequences shown in slow-motion, looks like the real deal. There is action and storyline with mystery and suspense and everything you would want in a superhero movie.
Except a great ending.
I didn't like the way the story takes a dark turn near the finale. I know that the twist is true to the character's comic book roots, but I fear the franchise will be severely damaged as it moves forward.
We will see.
On my rating scale, despite my misgivings with the climax, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" earns a home run.
