Thor: The Dark World November 8, 2013
Thor: The Dark World
Studio: Marvel Entertainment
Rating: PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, and some suggestive content.

Everyone's favorite Asgardian Avenger returns in 'Thor: The Dark World". Since the battle of New York with his fellow superheroes, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has returned home where he's been busy keeping the peace among the Nine Realms.

However, even as he battles trolls and monsters, Thor keeps his eye on his earthbound love, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman).

When Jane abruptly disappears from the all-encompassing view of Heimdall, Thor know something is amiss. So, he returns to Midgard to find her.

They are reunited in London, where Jane has been researching very strange gravitational anomalies. Thor soon learns that Jane is carrying a powerful energy known as the Aether. Thousands of years ago, the Asgardians prevented the Dark Elves from using the Aether to plunge the universe into darkness. But with the once every 5000-year convergence of the Nine Realms happening again, the dark elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) wants to use the Aether to snuff out all light.

This film is very different in tone from the first Thor movie. Much of the action takes place on Asgard and scattered throughout the Nine Realms, with only the climax staged in London. The Dark Elves are such a powerful foe that Thor is forced to free his imprisoned brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and ask for his help. Once again, Hiddleston steals the show as the God of Mischief. He's the best thing about the movie.

But he's not alone. Great performances by Hemsworth and Portman keep the action going, with Marcy (Kat Dennings) getting more screen time and serving as welcome comic relief. A minor quibble concerns Malekith. He's a rather bland villain with fuzzy motivation. However, the character's shortcomings weren't enough to ruin the movie.

With fantastic special effects, great battle scenes, a compelling story and more Asgardian action, this is a rousing chapter in the Marvel Film series.

On my rating scale, "Thor: The Dark World" earns a HOME RUN.
