August 30, 2013 Getaway
Studio: After Dark Films Rating: PG-13 for intense action, violence and mayhem throughout, some rude gestures, and language.
Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) has a big problem. He used to race cars but he left that sport to live a quieter life.
However, his wife is kidnapped by a shadowy figure who forces Brent to steal a car equipped with cameras, so the bad guy can see his every move.
He's ordered to drive the souped up Shelby Mustang through the streets of Bulgaria, performing the demands of the kidnapper (Jon Voight).
Soon, he's joined by the car's owner, played by former Disney star Selena Gomez, who is also a talented computer hacker.
Together they blast through the streets of Bulgaria, attracting all kinds of attention.
If you liked senseless hard to follow action scenes, then this is the movie for you. Hawke and Gomez spend most their time trapped in the car hurtling along at ever more dangerous speeds.
"Getaway" fails on just about every level imaginable. The plot is repetitive and uninspired. Hawke is serviceable as the reluctant hero but Gomez' performance is bland and weak She's in way over her head, which is kind of hard to believe in a movie that asks so little of her..
Voight's villain would be better suited for a comic book movie as his outlandish demands make no sense.
There's plenty of action but after a while you get numb to it. The scenes are quick cut with fast edits so you never settle into a rhythm.
"Getaway" is an excuse to show off a classic muscle car. Unfortunately, the vehicle is the best part of the movie and delivers the most entertaining performance.
I can't even recommend this as mindless entertainment. Instead, it's just an assault on the senses.
