Kick-Ass 2 August 16, 2013
Kick-Ass 2
Studio: Universal
Rating: R for strong violence, pervasive language, crude and sexual content, and brief nudity.

Based on a ultra- violent comic book, "Kick-Ass 2" continues the adventures of a teenager who decided the world needed real-life superheroes.

Three years after the events of the first film, we rejoin the life of Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), whose antics as Kick-Ass inspired a legion of people to put on costumes and fight crime.

Wrestling with his future, Dave decides to team up with Mindy McReady's Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz). However, she's not too excited about the prospect of forming a dynamic duo.

Dave eventually persuades her to team up, So the two hit the streets. However, Mindy has a problem. Her step-father Marcus (Morris Chestnut) has forbidden her from wearing the costume. Despite that, hes suspicious that she may be living a secret double life.

Mindy eventually gets busted by marcus and that leaves Dave all alone. So he joins a group of like-minded amateur heroes, including Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey) in the battle against evil. But where there are heroes, there are villains.

Chris D'Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) has changed his name from the Red Mist to something more profane. And he's vowed revenge on Dave for killing his father.

I loved the first film and I'm happy with the sequel. Nothing can replicate the shock and entertainment of seeing a 12-year old Hit Girl dishing out ludicrous amounts of violence but this older version stays true to her character who finally shares the movie's spotlight with Dave.

In addition to fighting bad buys, Dave and Mindy must find a way to navigate high school. The movie uses over-the-top violence as a tool to tell that portion of the story.

Don't be mistaken, like its predecessor, this film is bloody and messy. But if you are a fan of the series you will be happy with the build-up to the final battle between Dave and Chris as they settle their differences once and for all.

On my rating scale, "Kick-Ass 2" earns a TRIPLE. It sputters a bit as it gets more serious near the end, but it's still a great ride.
