Question of the Day
EYEWITNESS NEWS QUESTION OF THE DAY RESPONSE

Would support legislation that would make it child abuse for a pregnant woman to use drugs?

Yes Votes
8% No:

A SAMPLING OF YOUR RESPONSES:

Because even if they do women will still drink and still do drugs.
Michael, Richwood

The expecting mother is hurting the child. It's the same as her giving the child drugs after it is born... both ways the child is going to suffer or die from the drugs. So YES!! I think it should be considered child abuse.
DeDe, Pikeville

Of course! What kind of question is that. As a mother they should be more responsible to what they are doing. And if they are doing it while being pregnant, then you know they are not going to care what they do after they have it. I would support this 100% with all my efforts. I know starting our young generation we don't want them comming into this world as druggies because after they get older what will we have? So yes i think this will be an excellent thing to have!
Melissa Emeline, Smither

I think that any women that uses drugs or drinks alcohol while pregnant should be tried for child abuse. It's the same as any parent abusing thier child after birth.
Brookie Moore, Alum Creek

If you don't want your baby you can put it up for adoption. I think that it is very selfish to do drugs while you are pregnant. It is only 9 months long and when it is over you can give your child up for adoption and do whatever harmful things that you want to your body after that. There are plenty of people out there that would be very happy to have that baby that the mothers are so selfishly abusing.
Lisa Fullen, Huntington

How can we hold a mother accountable for drug use when she has the option to abort. It can not work both ways the unborn baby is a human with a life worth protecting or it is not.
Shari, St. Albans

A baby depends on its mother to care for him/her. If the mother is doing drugs or drinking alcohol, she is abusing the child is supposed to protect. Therefore she should have to prove to be clean of all substances for a long period of time before she is allowed to have custody of her child.
Sandi, Charleston

We have made unborn babies so unimportant and have became a human race of its all about me, that I think it is about time that someone says enough is enough!
Katherine W., Elkview

I would definitely support the legislation on this issue. Drug and alcohol use can cause serious damage that will affect these babies not only in the womb, but throughout their entire lives (if they even live). I believe that it would be very important for the mothers to be offered help with their problem before action, such as losing their children, would be taken. But one chance is more than enough when it comes to this issue, if they do not show promise of reform, then something should be done because babies at this stage of development are far to fragile to withstand that kind of abuse.
Ajah Fitzpatrick, Huntington

That is possible pre-meditated murder.
Barbara Hansen, Sissonville

Using drugs while pregnant is definately child abuse. These mothers should have their children taken away, and be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!!!!

A baby unborn is still living and is still a child, I feel that any mother that would do that to their unborn child would do worse once the baby was born. Most parents who are on drugs care more about that then they do their family. The child would not be taken care of the right way and would not have much of a childhood because mommy and daddy would always be strung out on something. So yes I would vote or support it because the baby is the victim in that case or any case where the child or baby is not being taken care of. Some body needs to stand up and be on the childs side.
Obrien, Nitro

It is a God given gift to carry a child and anyone who abuses their body or inflicts themselves with drugs and alcohol should be punished. The child is not able to defend itself and should have someone looking out for it's protection.
K. Baldwin, Charleston

Yes, I believe women who do not care about there unborn child enough to not get away from the drug and alcohol should be slapped with child abuse. That baby has 9 months they have the rest of ther life. I am 19 years old and pregnant and I am a former meth addict, I quite before I got pregnant but I quite for myself and seen what my former friends have now turned into and what I once was. I just can't believe I ever but myself and my body through that. And to do it whlie pregant is just completely unbelieveable. All I can say to those mothers who use drugs and alcohol is grow up and give the baby a fair chance in this world it hard enough the way it is.
M.C., Charleston

This should have been passed years ago!
Teresa, Pinch

My feelings are that we need to be very cautious that we give treatment options and care first.
Angela, Charleston

No doubt about it. It is child abuse, plain and simple. They should be punished.
Laura, Hurricane

Yes I totally agree. But of course I dont think it will pass since the law is so bad regarding the welfare of children. According to one Family Law Judge in Parkersburg, WV, as long as the parent doesnt kill the child but can abuse the child he says that it is ok for the child to remain in the parents custody. This is horrible.
PV, Dunbar

to many women abuse drugs while pregnant and think there is no consequences
Tracy Bird, Kanawha Falls

They should be held accountable for. The unborn child is a human being. It is not at faught for comming into this world. The biological mother is. They have or had a choice of not getting pregnant. Since their choic was to participate in activities that will or is the result of getting. The bottom line is they had/ have a choice.
Rosa Richardson, Madison, Florida 32340

YES! Personaly I feel there is no excuse to drink, smoke or use drugs...and if your not capable to quit or not use them at all, then youve made the choice of being unfit to be a parent!!! I smoked for 12 years and when I realized I COULD Have been pregnant I stopped, cold turkey!!! Theres no excuse, if you cant control yourself then you need help and if your too busy tending to your own needs (counsiling or selfishness) who is meeting the needs of the child?! You use you loose! Not just in your own life but you should be made oh so accountable for your unborn childs and for any children aready born and living with or around the/a user! A childs well being comes first!
Kris Hall, Charleston

It is morally wrong to do drugs while pregnant, it should be a criminal act.
Scott Johnson, Morrisvale

It's the same as putting drugs and alcohol in their bottles. What they do directly affects the baby so they should be held accountable.
Nina Cooper, Nellis
