EYEWITNESS NEWS QUESTION OF THE DAY RESPONSE

Martha Stewart was found guilty by a jury. Do you agree with the verdict?

56% Yes:
Yes Votes
44% No:
No Votes

A SAMPLING OF YOUR RESPONSES:

Child molesters, rapists are released or not locked up.oj simpson gets away with murder.a woman sells her own stock she goes to prison.whats wrong here? i think this should not have gone to court. look at the cost involed here.this was becouse she was martha and someone was looking for a feather in thier hat.martha should fire and sue her atterneys.
Lindy, Battle Creek

And I don't think she needs to come to WV to a Country Club type prison. She is no better than anyone else. Lock her up with everyone else!
Sheila Ganoe, Tornado

No, all she did was step on the big Boy's toes. Don't mess with the big boys.
E. Thorn, Parkersburg,

What she did was wrong no matter if shes famous or not
Arielle Price, Summersville

Yes i think that this was the right justice. she devaceed this like hell.
Stoney Morales, Rosedale

Yes, I believe that Martha was guilty, but she should not spend time in prison. A heavy fine should suffice. When we have people like the Enron exec's still running free, it makes her $40,000 or so seem very insignificant, and let us not forget that many murderer's do less time and the same for rapist.
John, Charleston

Everyone should be held accountable to the law, not just ordinary people. If it were any regular person that nobody cared about, this wouldn't even be an issue. Send her to jail!
Bob Yourkson, Anaheim

First of all, it is not a matter whether I agree with the verdict. The jury are the people who heard the evidence. I did follow a lot of the proceedings butI also believe in the right to appeal. To me, from what I've read and heard from the media,it appears this is not an open and shut case. The apparent tampering of the phone logs does not look good for Martha, but who tampered with the logs? I think this case is worth an appeal and hopefully the truth can come out.
Harold Spangler, Charleston

Absolutely! Ms. Stewart acted (as she always does) so arrogant during the trial, it was as if she was put out to be there. Bringing in her friends (Rosie O'donnell, Bill Cosby, etc.) smells of arrogance. I don't care what the amount was, her actions said it all. I'm so glad that the jury was able to see through her smoke screen. I doubt she will ever see the inside of a prison, but the thought is almost good enough! Everybody knows if she was a ordinary citizen, the outcome would never have been in doubt!
Mark Fulks, Charleston

Yes I agree with the verdict, she broke the law and got caught! Now she needs to pay for her crime, not to mention the fact that she was just plain mean. God gave her a gift that she didn't appreciate! Even Martha Stewart is not above the law!
Tina Manley, Charleston

No i don't think she should have recieved any time for what they said she did. She should have been fined what they said she gained. After all she will cost the tax payers for food and personal idems while in jail. And let us not forget GOOD OLE George needs the money to finish up his little war he got started.
Larry, Cabin Creek

I say give her home confinement. There are people out there doing a lot worse things than what she did and they get off. She should not go to jail. Who did she hurt? No one but herself.
Mae, Kenna

I feel that Martha Stewart has had to pay for other people's wrongdoings. She is a scapegoat in this situation. I think she is innocent. I would watch her TV shows now as in the past. She has worked very hard and does not deserve this unjust treatment.
Kay Hickman, Miami, WV

Celebrities are not above the law -- she had information that most people would never have access to and she decided to use it in greedy selfish way.
Jonnie Blackburn, Charleston

I am a big fanof Martha Stewart. i still believe in her. The government just went after her because of who she is. She came from poor family and made something of her life, and too many people are against her. Look at her best friend she turned on her because she stopped giving her money. So I don't think she should have to go to jail at all. Leave her alone.
Vicki Meadows, Charleston

It's a shame that under the Bush administration, so many who have done the same things, have gotten off scott free.
Mike Keeney, Scott Depot

I think her actions were based on greed and arrogance.
Everett Anderson, Houston TX

I agree with the verdicts. The evidence wast there to support them. However, as far as spending time in prision, there are crimes committed everyday that people are found guilty for and they don't spend any time in prision. If she was an unknown name and got convicted of these crimes, more than likely she would not go to prision. Only because of who she is, does she face that possibility and that's not right.
Veronica Bird, Charlton Heights

A jury of her peers found she violated the law, now she should suck it up and live with it.
Tammy, Charleston

Martha Stewart has been a stockbroker and served on the board of the New Your Stock Exchange. She knew exactly what she was doing.
Dana, Shelby

I truely believe that she knew what she was doing! She had a background in stocks. She always wanted to be like the boys so now she has be be punished!
Dee, Huntington

Martha could bring a little class to West Virginia -- even from a prison! Perhaps, (the state government needing money and all), they can put her in a public viewing cage, and charge admission to see her and folks could get personalized cooking and gardening tips. Autographs too. The possibilities are endless!
Patrick W. Crabtree, Lucasville

Of course the wealthy will never do serious time but let middle class or poor do the same thing and they will do 10 to 20 years. But remember our system of justice is fair. He who does'nt have the fare gets the justice..
S. Berryman, Friendly

Not enough
Tim Shanks, St. Marys

I think the prison time is too harsh. She is not a threat to anyone. Who twisted her stockbroker's arm to give her this information? I think she was set up.
Judy Salmons, West Hamlin

If the jury found her guilty because of the evidence then she must be. There must have been enough incriminating evidence against her. I think the woman is very intelligent and she has certainly helped millions with her cooking, decorating, etc. but she evidently made a bad choice.
Gloria Gordon, Cumming

Why is she different then anything else? Maybe she she can make a pretty pastel cell cover.
Matt, Beckley

I do not know enough about the case. However, I am sorry she is in trouble. And since she is not a threat to society, probation is the sentence to impose.
Mark Clay, Huntington

Someone worth over one billion dollars is not going to scheme and plot to save a few thousand. She is paying the price of a public outcry for rich blood.
Diane Beard, Dixie

becuz she is guilty
Lisa, Maple Grove

Although celebrity status shouldn't give one immunity to the law of the land, there are so many bigger fish to fry. If it were you and I, would this even be a point of contention on national news?
Laurie Shultis, Spencer

Evidently she did not give the Bush campain enough or they would have not bothered her as they are doing Enron.
Lyle Bradford, Gilbert

She did not commit a crime against the people. She only did what any sane person would do, and many have done. It is similar to her breaking a lock to gain entry into her own home. Forced entry? Yes! Crime against the people? No!
Randy Anderson, Charleston

I would have done the same thing, and so would 98% of the country.
Jamie Brown, Davin

If you do the crime, you must the time! If peers found her guilty, then it must be so.
Linda, Charleston

Now if they will get the rest of the ones involved, their is more that has done wrong than Martha Stewart.
Phyllis Perry, St. Albans

The only reason she got in any trouble at all is because she is famous. If any average every day person would have done that they probably would have only gotten a smack on the hands.
Tasha, Cross Lanes

I think she should get the same time any non-celebrity would get. I also think she should pay a fine equal to the cost of putting her in jail.
Larry Sutters, S. Charleston

I believe the punishment should fit the crime and that is not the case with Martha Stewart. The Enron/Tyco, etc. folks should be worried. They will be sentenced to life or more with crimes of such magnitude. Their crimes directly affected many people.
Elaine, Anderson

No I don't agree with the verdict.I live in WV. and our jails and prisons are filled to the max and should be used for something other than a lie which is all she really did.If they want to punish her why don't they make her spend some of that money of hers and go work at a real kitchen and help feed the poor.
Cindy, Mason

This trial was a waste of tax payers money (ten million ). Fine her $50,000 and let her go. This trial was to make us all FEAR the Govt.It is about control.
William Chase, Richmond, VA.

I thank they wanting to bring her down because she is a sucessful woman and they wanted to make a example of her.
Karen Legg, Wallback

I think its all people just being jealous of her , she dont deserve to be put in jail shes a good person at heart.
April, Marmet

The same thing she is accused of doing goes on everyday and nothing is ever said. Can we say ENRON? I believe she is being used as an example. I feel really bad for her and her family.
Lisa, Huntington

Rich people need to get punished for crimes the same as any one else. I do think 20 years might be a bit much but i think she needs to do some actual time in prison.
Kimberly Bragg, Poca

All the other guys should have to spend time in prison. Also, the ones that do the same thing..Martha is not alone.
Lillie McDonald, Jackson

I think she was singled out because she was a woman. Enron associates did worse than she, and what will the courts do with them ? I think that she should receive probation with a watchful care over her actions for two years. Let her continue her wonderful creativity and show. I think that she made a mistake and now realizes it. She is not a hardened criminal. Look what they do with major criminals, pardons and etc.
Marilyn Crawford, Saint Albans

I think this was a crime that only hurt her and those around her. I do not think she deserves jail time. And I would stop shopping kmart if they were to stop carrying her products.
Anna, Boomer

I don't agree with the verdict agains Martha Stewart. She is guilty of nothing except being brutely abused by the news media. Assess a fine fitting the crime, and move on.
Mark Shamblin, Dunbar

Maybe she can come out with her own line of clothes in bright orange or black & white stripes
Maria Bodamer, South Point

She should get more time. I would
Michael, Bim

Micheal Eisner of Disney made roughly 750 million as CEO between 1992 and 2002. Thats 75 million a year. I have no sympathy for Ms. Stewart. Someone with such an abundance of wealth should spend more than 10 months in club cozy, she should have to give 90% of her earnings to charity and start all over again. Greed is bad.
John Hayes, Shepherdstown

They would not do something like that. They will not sale so.
David Blackwell, Loust Grove, GA

The sentence should be 16 to 20 years in Prison.
Leland Greene, Jackson, Ohio
