Should West Virginia schools be required to post the ten commandments?

A SAMPLING OF YOUR RESPONSES:

I beleive Mr.Manchin is proposing a great thing. We need Morality back in society today. I beleive the United States was found on Christian Beleives. Majority should rule;the Majority are Christians.
Brandon Stover, Sissonville, WV

Our children need to have this guidance of what is considered right and wrong. The Ten Commandments give a strong guideline as to how we should live our life and how we should treat others. If all of us would strive to follow the Ten Commandments we would find that our country would be a much safer place to live.
Kathy L Young, Scott Depot

I think if they post it, they need to post something from every religion.
Samantha Lane, Dunbar

I fully agree, the orginial constitution did not say anything about seperation of church and state and I think we need to get back to what our orginial forefathers believed in. Maybe our young people will start respecting their elders and there country more, as well as their self.
Marlene S, St. Albans

I think it would be a great idea. I bet very few children know the ten commandments. This lets them know what is right and wrong.
Jerry Ryder, Elkview

I dont think they should post the ten commandments in our schools because we need to have the freedom to choose which ever religion we want to, and i think that posting them would act as a kind of push toward the christian faith.
Savannah Newman, Whitesvile, WV

The Ten Commandments are the starting point for all Law. We need to expose our children in the process of training them to be good citizens.
William Chase, Richmond, VA

Absolutely!
Cindi, Boomer

This is a clear violation of the law separating church and state!
Carol Rapp, Skelton

I think it would be wonderful to have the ten commandments posted! One of the commandments is Thou Shall Not Kill. Is that such a horrible thing to teach our kids? I say no. Let them be posted and maybe our school and our children will improve in their character.
Melinda Ferrell, St. Albans

I sincerely think the Ten Commandments should be posted, if you're so against it, don't slow down and read it.
Rachel Curry, Logan

The laws are based on them it would be a good example besides they should already be there!
Domenick Larzo, Madison

Every court that has looked at this issue has rulled it unconstitutional. It is a waste of taxpayer money and will only benefit the lawyer who challenges and wins the case.
John H. Kozak, Charleston

I see no problem with the ten commandments in school nor do I see a problem with prayer. i think everything should be included in school.
Larry Wiseman, St.Albans

ABSOLUTELY! GOD our father gave us those commandments for a reason. We were to all follow every single one of them. Why shouldn't our children know them the same way we did.
Jewel Rawlins, Wheelersburg, Ohio

If parents want their children to learn the 10 commandments, they can post them in their homes.
Sara Murray Sergent, St. Albans

School is for learning . Why not post what the kids in school belive in all religons should be talked about in school .Part of life part of learning .
Linda Nowlin, Lesage

Because if where going to learn about other gods like the greeks. Why not about jesus crist him self.I am a riverside student and i want to learn about the god i belive in.
Jesse Cottrell, Charleston

Our children today need morals! It is our duty to teach our children right from wrong. The Ten Commandments is a wonderful tool for doing just that!
Catina Werry, Pomeroy

I think the posting of the ten commandments is a violation of separation of church and state. IF the commandments are posted. It should be as it is in Logan County with the Pillars of Islam, words of Confucious, the Wiccan Rede, Buddhist values, as well as Hindu and other religions represented around the world. We are in a world economy now, and we should also recognize world values.
Judith Howard, South Charleston

It's about time that we have someone in the Government willing to put God back where he should be - #1. The reason things are out of hand is because we have placed God behind everything else in our lives when ultimatley he should be first.
Penny, Charleston

I don't think West Virginia schools should be required to post the ten commandments. There are a lot of other religions out there other than Christianity, and people aren't considering that. I, myself, am Pagan, and while posting the ten commandments wouldn't really offend me, it makes me feel as if another religion is being forced upon me. I'm sure many other people feel the same. It is in the Constitution that no state will take a religion. Posting the ten commandments would be doing exactly that.
Danielle Thomas, Charleston

This country was based on christian principles and children need to know. Christians need to step forth and be heard.
Darlene Wilkes, So Charleston

I belive that all students should be able to see and learn about the Ten Commandments, if they are posted students can stop by and read them. Some students probably will not have a chance to learn about them unless schools teach them, not preach them!
Emily, Lucasville

The separation of church and state must be COMPLETE to be effective. This would be opening the door to religion in schools which singles out those who are not the religious majority and something I lived with my entire school age years until this law was passed in the first place! There is a church on every corner -- USE THEM -- but leave our schools out of it!
Linda Khumnark, Charleston

If parents don't like the idea of them being schools, maybe they should the bible or go back where there came from. If it haven't been for Jesus we wouldn't be here today. Think people!
Denver Thomas, Kenna

YES indeed I do!!!Our children and adults as well need all the positive feedback they can get;they are morally respectable, acceptable and emotionally healthy for our spirits!
BJ Grey, Montgomery

I don't think he could Require it to be posted, although I do like the idea. I do think it Should be done voluntarily, and I'd love to see it in more public places. We are a country whose founders were very mindful of our God, and should keep that in mind. It wasn't until they took prayer and Bibles out of schools that we got into trouble in the first place. Just read the history books and compare the dates for yourself.
Mary Bradley, Parkersburg

Courts all over the country have already settled this issue. This is a nothing more than a campaign strategy - a promise Mr. Manchin won't have to keep.
Gene Coulson, Charleston

I do not agree with requiring the posting of the ten commandments in public schools. Although I believe in the ten commandments I believe that there is no actual point to add to the many levels of character education that are already supposed to be taught in schools. In addition, is Mr. Manchin prepared to foot the bill for the many lawsuits that are sure to follow challenging the constitutionality of the posting of the commandments?
Craig Snyder, Scott Depot

I think that the Ten Commandments should be posted in the schools of West Virginia. The morals of this country are in serious trouble. There is a need for improvment and we should start with school aged children.
Gwen Shalap, Sissonville, WV

I think that West-Virginia schools should be able to post the Ten Commandments in public schools because not all students have the privaledge of going to church and getting to learn about the Ten Cammandments and what they are about. The Ten Commandments are what the law is based around and it might help childeren realize what they are doing if they have commited a crime.
Stephanie, Racine, Ohio

Our country was founded on God. I think they should be posted everywhere. Look at our nation as a whole we have allowed God to be taken out of everything and look around the nation has gotten worse. Put God back where he needs to be and we will see a difference.
D.Carpenter, Harmony

People want to talk about the seperation of church and state then why does state and government officials get Christmas holiday off. Christmas represents the birth of Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God, God wrote the Ten Commandments, we have hundreds of laws trying to enforce the Ten Commandments what's wrong with teaching our children choices for their future. Teenagers and children in schools face so much in life they shouldn't have to deal with people making their future choices.
Misty Keeney, Sylvester

The Bible says you re to obey the laws of the land you live in!!The law in the US has stood as is for over a century. If you teach your students to break one law then they wil think it's OK to bread any law. I'm a retired teacher and students don't need more differences in the school to seperate them but more opportunities to unite them.
Eleanor S Butcher, Procious

I think they should post the ten commandments and other religious documentation. Not just Christian documents. This would help childern others beilfs and should help cut down on religous prejustice. They should not just limit to Christian documentatio though.
Sarah, Huntington

Seperation of church and state means one cannot run the other which is a good idea. If the majority of people want something religious in their school, and the state says no, then they are in effect running the religion. This would not be required curriculum but character education when a child chooses to read it.
Susan Wray, Goldtown

The Ten Commandments are God's instructions. Even though Christ came and gave us a perfect way to God through His Blood, He did not in any way nullify the Ten Commandments. How can people say that they could do harm in any way? I work in the public school system and morals seem to be absent in many cases. How could something that could only improve behavior and morals cause any problems?
David Ferrell, Poca

I think the Ten Commandts should be placed on all state buildings in addition to the schools, this includes colleges and universities.
James L. Pritt, BeaverV

I would encourage Mr. Manchin to focus his attention upon those issues that will unite rather than divide us. No less a constitutional authority than Thomas Jefferson resolved this contrversy over two centuries ago when he said there should be a wall of seperation between church and state.
Charles F. Conroy Jr., St. Albans

Yes, I would like to commend Joe Manchin for taking that stand. Children should be taught wright from wrong. Is there a better way to do that ? This country is loosing our moral standards very fast and we need to do somethig. It is a shame that our supreme courts can not be trusted as to moral standards.
George W. Sergent, Gassaway

This country was founded on the principles of the 10 commandments, and Christianty in general. If other religions are offended then they should go somewhere else because Christians were here before they were. This should have happened a long time ago, and Joe Manchin just picked up my vote. Thanks
David Rhodes, Mt. Hope

Guidance and a higher faith is what are youth needs.
Nichole Lucas, Mink Shoals

Posting the Ten Commandments in public schools would be the best thing anyone could do for these kids.I think it would give the kids an idea about moral vaules.Anyone can see what has happen since they took prayer out of the schools.! I will definitely be voting for Joe Manchin just for this reason alone.
Kay Williams, Cabin Creek

People from other faiths don't try to pass their GOd's message through our pubblic schools, no matter how morally sound their beliefs are. Why should we. religon of any type should be tought at home and in our churches, not in our schools.
Cutter Butler, Charleston

This country was founded on christian beliefs ,it's about time we got back to them!
Wayne Keener, Lizemores

Its about time our children here about our laws of the bible.
Sandy, Cross Lanes

The world is based on the ten commandments and god. they should be spread through our country, and even the world.
Kristen Bird, Ashland

A lot of our childern today are lacking in morals. The ten commandments posted or displayed in our schools would be a constant reminded for them to do good. Our county is geting away from the important things that we were originally founded on. Our childern need all the help they can get in this day and time.
Betty Neal, Rainelle

I think that West Virginia should use these laws at schools because I have lived in West Virginia, and I have witnessed violence. I think these commandments will help make schools safer.
Kim Bird, Ashland

Kids should learn the Ten Commandments at a young age to help them understand the Bible and to know what is right and wrong.
Tiffany C., Racine Ohio

We have seen first-hand what happens when a leader is controlled by religious groups. The patriot act, loss of human rights...ect. The separation of church and State was enacted for a reason!!!
J. Wickline, Fayetteville

I think they should also have the Lords Prayer in school
Michael & Diana Robinson, East Bank

children need a positive influence with morality as opposed to what they see on MTV and every other worldly thing they have been exposed to. We are getting farther away from doing what is right in our freedoms, and God will not allow us to demoralize our society without consequences.
Larry W Brown, Naoma

Our nation's constitution was based on the Christian religion by the founding fathers. The Christian religion is based upon the ten commandments. Therefor, Mr. Manchin is correct in his idea to post them in the schools.
Mike Leatherman, Parkersburg

One important element of education is discovering the truth and ordering ourlives according to the truth. The truth is that our whole system of law & justice was originally based on the 10 commandments.
Frank Straughter, Charleston

I believe that since God was taken out of the school system, and goverment, that things have gone downhill. There is a reason that our money says in god we trust. If America would simply put their faith in him, the world would be such a better place.
Sarah White, Marmet

Absolutely not. Religion has no place in public schools. Separation of church and state cannot be selective.
Leonard Grubble, Huntington

Yes, I think that the schools should have the Ten Commandments in the school because they show history and what people should not do in the world. People ought to see that children now days are growing up as culprits and the need some punishment. But the wimpy parents don't have enough courage to because they are afraid to hurt their children.
Christy Dawn Smith, Walton

I think they should. They are not forcing the kids to read it, it is giving the option to the kids if they would like to or not. And if it is there and they read it, they may ask more questions and really want to learn more about history.
James Wright, Charleston

I see nothing wrong with publicly posting a set of moral rules which only support good character. IF only people could see beyond the religious aspect for a moment and look at the meaning of the moral code, he or she could understand the significance in such action.
Brenten Whipkey, Charleston

If more people, not only children, were taught to obey and respect the Ten Commandments, our world would have a lot fewer problems and more respect for our fellow man!!
Karen Barnette, Ripley

Our country was founded on the 10 commandments. So Yes they should be taught & posted. I will vote for Joe if this is one of his Campaign Promises
Rusty Arthur, Winfield

The Ten Commandments definitely should be posted in the public schools. The 10 commandments instill good moral principles and values that this nation was founded on, and should continue to be recognized by everyone.
Derrick Jordan, Grayson

Has everyone forgotten about the separation of church and state? Religion belongs in the home and church, not in government or schools.
C Halstead, Charleston

We have tried to keep the ten commandments and God out of our schools and look what terrible condition our schools are in. I feel it is time to try the alternative and teach morals and see in 5 years where our schools are. I am a registered Republican and if Manchin will do this he has my vote.
Rosalene Black, Milton

I think that's what's wrong with our children today. When I was in High School, we said a morning prayer and it didn't hurt or offend anyone. There's so much violence in the schools, I think the Ten Commandments would be great. I have a daughter in High School and a son in Middle School and I would be honored for them to see the Ten Commandments daily.
Jeanie Balser, Ripley

I believe that all schools in WV should be required to post the 10 Commandments. Everytime tragedy strikes such as Columbine shootings and things of the such the first things that people do is go to prayer services but they don't want God in the school. If God is not wanted in the school all the time you shouldnt go asking him to be there when things get rough. I stand behind Manchin 100% and support him taking a stand for the right.
Heather, Montgomery

The Ten Commandments should never have been removed from schools. This country was founded one nation under God. Those who don't believe or want things changed should leave the US>
Charlene Spaulding, lyburn

Joe Manchin is an idiot!
Ray McCormick, Charleston

I pray for the people who oppose this. I think the problem with kids today is they have no morals. I support Mr. Manchin.
Priscilla Roberts, Scott Depot

I think they should never have been taken out anywhere! We need to get back to the morals and standards of God. Period!
Mary Dickens, Sylvester

I definatly beleive they should be.It is not necessacerly a religous thing but it sure is for good moral living. We need more people of god to speak out.
Janet G Samples, Elkview

It was not too long ago when the Ten Commandments were posted and encouraged to live by and we did not have the crime and violence and overall problems that not only WV but the entire country is facing today. It does not take much education to see this. According to the Supreme Court we are a Christian nation whether others like it or not.
Randy Carter, Charelston

I feel that it would be constitutionally unfair not to. I have two children, and I appreciate any help in teaching good moral values. If they take this away, what's next?, shutting down community churches???
Steve Kessler, Mammoth

We need to put God and morals back in school
Maxine Hawks, Princeton

I think that they should be posted and even get back to Bible Reading and Prayer in the schools. I feel that when these things were taken from the schools that is when things began happening the wrong way in the schools. I think that God has been left out this country in so many things that we need to get back to the TRUE GOD of the Bible.
Larry Yost, Huntington

Our children need the basic guidelines that the Ten Commandments give us. Look at our society the way it is today and then tell me things wouldn't be better if those Commandments were posted for all children to see while growing up. The Commandments are principles we should all live by regardless of the religion from which they were derived.
J Harrah, Oak Hill

I thank the Ten Commandments should be back in school and the holy bible should read in classes to. I thank Joe Manchin is right the they should be in all school in West Virginia because it should be in all classes.
Donald Shamblin, St. Albans

I caint believe there is any question about this, hell yeah they should be in schools.
Sonnette Childers, West Side

If people worried more about God ,then they would not have to worry about children going hungry or without medical ins. because God would take care of it!
angela cook, danville

I am very much for having the Ten Commandments posted in our public schools. Thanks for your servey.
Linda Porter, Barboursville

Schools should not be required to post the Ten Commandments, but should be able to teach of them if teaching about religious groups, and if they teach about one religion they should be required to teach about the other religions too.
Travis Parsons, Elkview

I would rather have the Ten Commandments in schools than guns When God was taken out of schools the high standards were removed now there is no right or wrong just make up your own.
Carl D. Martin, Dunbar

As a teacher in Lincoln County schools, I completely agree with Joe Manchin. The Ten Commandments should be posted in West Virginia's public schools.
Rachel McCormick, Eighth-Grade English teacher, Yawkey

That would be a start on taking the (Parent) role back. Maybe Parents will gain some respect from their children. Cause i'm a firm beleiver that your kids pick up alot at school, so just maybe they will read the Commandments while hanging out in the halls, and just maybe some of them will stick in their minds.
Sophia Thomas, Parkersburg

I feel that they should be posted in ours schools for our children to read, and I also feel that prayer should be there also for whoever desires it. Lets put God back into a way of life..
Shawn Walker, Liberty

I believe that the Ten Commandments should be displayed. The children of today are not learning any morals and the Commandments are of the highest moral teachings. For those that disagree, ask them to quit spending our currency that states In God We Trust.
David Morton, Summersville

I think that they should be posted and even get back to Bible Reading and Prayer in the schools. I feel that when these things were taken from the schools that is when things began happening the wrong way in the schools.
Larry Yost, Huntington

our country was founded on the priencipals of the ten commandments and we have functiond just fine until we started letting every tom dike and harry from other countries come over here and start telling us how we have to live our lives and i think it is high time we stand up and put a stop to it
Ralph Mobley, Cross Lanes

The constitutional conflict is obvious, even if it's voluntary. With all of the CRUCIAL issues facing this state, shame on Manchin AND the media for attempting to make this a priority issue.
R. Burford, Charleston

I am a local Preacher i do not think that the church should seperate from the state moreless the school system.
Patrick Kinser, Lyburn

Absolutely the 10 Commandments should be posted in our schools. Just compare the morality of this nation between the time prayer was taken out of school and now.
Dan Duncan, Cross Lanes

Requiring anyone to post the Ten Commandments is a direct violation of the concept of separation of church and state. I think it is fine to give schools the right to post them if they so choose, but requiring it is a little much.
Toni, Fayetteville

I am a conservative republican and sold-out Christian. I don't see the need for legislation requiring the posting of the ten commandments but I fully support legislation permitting them to be posted in any and all public buildings.
Dan Pyles, Barboursville

I do not think it should be required or neccessarily portrayed as a relic, but I think it should be up to the individual districts as to what is appropriate for their particular school.
Shannon Powers, Athens

I think we need to put the Ten Commandment back in our schools and prayer and God! We have IN GOD WE TRUST on our money, why not the Ten commandments in our schools? If we could teach our children to obey the ten commandments the crime rate would go down , bottom line the whole world would be a better place to live!
Mrs Joyce Hamilton, Wharton

The silent majority has allowed more and more of our freedoms and the very doctrines of our country to be eliminated by organizations such as the ACLU. We need to stand firm and defend our rights to express our beliefs.
Judy Reed, Dunbar

I am Senior at George Washington High School and I don't think this is a question of separation of church and state. I think it is a way alienate children that have a hard enough time to fit in as it is, whether it be due to the color of their skin, beliefs of their family, or their place of their worship.
Carrie, Charleston

I really am tired as a christian of not being permitted to impose upon others rights while my rights as a christian are constantly being imposed upon. I'm sure Joe Manchin will lose votes because of his position on this matter but I for one will probably vote for him just for his having the tenacity to speak up.
Charlotte J. Linville, Charleston

This is such a historical document which list essential values or guidelines if you will, for all humanity to live by.
Eric Halstead, Seth

Put the 10 Commandments and the Bible and Prayer back in the schools. If this would happen, there would be a better group of young adults graduating from our schools.
Ord Elmore, Charleston

I think that by allowing the ten commandments to be taught in the schools in west virginia, you will be instilling very good values in the future of our children. The ten commandments are something everyone should know. It could also cut down some of the crime that has seemed to have gotten worse in west virginia.
Melton Hilliard, South Charleston

Regardless of what anyone thinks, the Ten Commandments are part of our History.
Gary McGowan, Huntington

This is clearly unconstitutional, clearly a terrible idea, and clearly is designed to put Judeo-Christian beliefs (and no others) where they do not belong.
John, Charleston

Hi, I would just like say that the 10 commandments should stay in our schools definately!
Brandy Gibson Kinser, Logan County

We have strayed so far from the Constitution. Separation of church and state is not even in the Constitution, but came from a personal letter of Thomas Jefferson. Our nation's laws came from the Bible. Sadly, some Americans are doing everything possible to erase God from society. I most certainly support the Ten Commandments in schools.
Christy Lindsey, Dunbar

The key word is require. To require the 10 commandments is to mandate religion. But on the other hand,to require their removal was also a mandate. The purpose on the seperation of church and state is sololy for the purpose of preventing religion from CONTROLING government. While at the same time, prevent government from CONTROLING religion. Since government has already placed controls on religon. It has esentially already violated the seperation of church and state amendment as stated in the constitution.
Roger Keesee, Saint Albans

This is a terrible idea--it is unconstitutional, it does nothing to help educate our children, and it obscures the real issues we need to address in this state, like a good business economy and better health for all citizens.
Jack, Charleston

Children need good teachers who can teach subjects like math, history, language, and writing--NOT RELIGION. That is for their parent or guardian to do. If you want to teach your children the commandments, do it, but leave mine alone!
Sharon, Charleston

As a tax payer I am tired of supporting a school system that is anti-God and anti-christ. Christians have had to pay extra to send their kids to christian schools ,let the infidels send their kids to an infidel school of their choice for a change.Maybe a little more about God and fewer prisons will be needed.
Oris L Lilly, Joyce A Lilly, Cool Ridge WV

I think it is a good idea. It teaches our children good morals and gives them something to think about.
Anna Ball, Athens

I strongly agree that the Ten Commandments should be in school like they use to be. That is what is wrong with kids these days. They need to bring the commandments and the paddle back
Brian, Hurricane, WV

Absolutely NOT! There is supposed to be a seperation of Church and State and that would violate that law. If the Ten Commandments are required to be displayed, then we need to display something from the Koran, a Buddhist proverb, a Hinduism passage, and so on. I think it would be terrible for Mr. Manchin to think he can force a Christian belief on others...that is very UN-AMERICAN.
John Hudson, Charleston, WV

As a High School student, I see no problem with the posting of the 10 commandments. The words of the commandments, can be looked upon something above religion, since they represent what we should abide by in everyday society.
Ryan Long, Bloomingrose

Yes, but i think the schools should post a sign that says -6 morals- and have the commandments thou shall honor thy father and mother, thou shall not murder, thou shall not commit adultry, thou shall not steal, thou shall not lie, and thou shall not covet. Only stating these 6 commandments have nothing to do with a certain religion and are 6 morals everyone should follow.
John M. Allevato, Charleston

I believe they should because if you keep them out, wouldn't that be one sided as well? The Ten Commandments should be posted because everyone would come out on top in the end...if you know what I am getting at.
Kevin Osborne, Belle

Hurray for Mr. Mansion! Maybe we can get God back in our schools!
Floyd Weaver, Pt. Pleasant

Saying he endorses the concept of separation of church & state, but would require posting of the 10 commandments makes him a walking contradiction!
Betsy Murphy, Charleston

I believe that children should know the Ten Commandments, because they do affect everyone in the country, and should be taught in public schools. I believe that everyone person should know the Ten Commandments and should know that some laws are based on them. Thanks!!!
Lindsey Hudkins, Flatwoods, WV

Yes, when we had prayer in the schools, we had God fearing children, and we felt safe sending our children to schoo.
Phyllis L. Perry, St. Albans

God bless Mr. Manchin!
Brenda Weaver, Leon

It infringes on other peoples beliefs. Not all people have the same beliefs.
Brian Snow, Saint Albans

Schools should help build minds and character !
John Szasz, Charleston

I think that the reason we have so many problems with our youth is that we have gotten away from the basic principles of the Bible. The Ten Commandments shows everyone that they are responsible for their own actions.
Mary, Hurricane

If the ten commandments had been posted, taught, and lived by, this country would not be in the low morality state that it is.
Jerry Knighten, Charleston

If they wouldn't have taken pray out of school, we wouldn't have to worry about whether or not we can post the 10 Commandments.
Ami, Point Pleasant

This country was founded on God....The constitution is founded on God.... Yes the 10 commandments should be posted in every school and government office..
Nancy, Beaver

Yes, Yes! Any good moral person, and especially Christians, should want this !!!
Dennis Weaver, Point Pleasant

God has been covered and hidden for far too long! It's time America and WV gets back to the moral standards that this country was founded. Have we forgotten how we became free? Spiritually/Physically?
Brian and Michelle Hodge, Dawes

I think the children need to see the ten commandments posted to remind them of what is acceptable and what is not. People ask why God lets things happen, it is because people take God out of everything. Don't expect him to be there if he is not wanted.
Robin, Hurricane

Ever since the drive to remove God from schools, the morals of school children have deteriorated sharply. Problems such as children chewing gum in class have been replaced by problems such as violence, murder, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, etc. It is time to return God to the classroom and start rebuilding the moral values of our school children.
Roger McComas, Charleston

I beleive that WV schools should be required to post the Ten Commandments, aside from the religous background on which our country was founded and is based, it also teaches our kids to be morally good people who respect their parents and the governmental laws.
Cheryl Bailey, Logan

As a student, I feel that the students should have a say in this. Why not make it that each individual student body votes on this subject? We vote on prom kings and student council, so why not the actual events that matter? I feel that politicians and parents want to control schools too much when the students should have some say in how the school is ran.
Jesse McNeely, South Charleston

As a student in West Virginia's public schools seeing the morals of students go down every day, I think that this is a VERY big decision that should definitely occur. Many students do not understand that the foundation of our country is the 10 Commandments. This will be a very good history lesson for most.
Ashley Cobb, Cross Lanes

Our nation was started as one nation UNDER GOD and it should stay that way. Now you have people trying to take one nation under God off of money out of courthouses out of schools, I think our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves right about now!!!!
Wendy, Ohio

The Ten Commandments should definitely be posted in schools as well as letting them say the Pledge of Allegiance. When 9-11 happened, the first thing that happened was prayer, including the Ten Commandments and saluting the Flag along with the Lord's Prayer being said in the schools. Why does it take some sort of horrible disaster to show that we need to start teaching our children the good morals that they should be living by?
Jean Garnes, Cross Lanes

This will begin to correct the issues that are facing our state. Mr. Schnieder has made a valid point. How could we focus on the ten commandments when there are so many other issues facing our state? However, the most important issue is to raise our children with proper morals. The other issues will begin to correct themselves over time.
John Blaker, Hurricane

I am very appalled that any person on this earth would NOT want these Laws to be placed in the school system. I, as a Christian, am obligated to say that I pray for the members of the ACLU.
Brett Wiley, Harts

In a generation of low morality the ten commandments would be a great start to publically get our children back on the right trac.
David Clark, Charleston

The ACLU spokeperson interviewed on the news apparently does not have enough mind of his own to reason that God gave us those 10 commandments for a reason; by following His Commands, we are living a life and teaching our children in a manner that will eradicate the unsolved problems he finds so monumental.
Michael Radcliff, Milton

The moral decline of this country began when God was taken out of the schools. It is high time God was put back in our society.
Pam, St. Albans

Christ says, If you love me keep my commandments. Our nation was founded on these beliefs why would we want to take the foundational building block away that gives life.
Lynn Samples, Charleston

Our founding fathers based our laws upon the Commandments there for I believe that the Ten Commandments should be posted in our public schools. No where in our constitution do you find the term seperation of church and state
Donna Lowe, Clendenin

My Wife (a former school teacher) and I agree, the wording should be changed to ALLOWED to post the ten commandments. Remove the Word REQUIRED
Gene & Barbara Gower, Gassaway

I see no conflict in posting the Ten Commandments.
Kelly Riffe, Charleston

Absolutely!our country was founded on christian values.that being said how can we not have them in our schools or our government buildings for that matter?
Jim Brewer, Cross Lanes

Required? No. Allowed? Absolutely!
Rebecca, St. Albans

I feel that the Ten Commandments should be allowed to be posted, not required. I feel that it is a politcal ploy to be elected knowing that the state supreme court will strike it down as being unconstituional, once the ACLU gets their hands on it. I would like to see the Ten Commandments to be posted in the schools, just to give the children somethign to think about.
Steven Swann, Huntington

I think that this would be a great thing. What would it hurt to tell something good and something that would not hurt you but help you if you apply these commandments to your life. It is done out of love for us. If you chose not then that is your choice now one is forcing you to live it.
Angela White, Lenore

Separation of church and state simply means that there shall be no state sponsored religion. It has nothing to do with displaying the Ten Commandments in schools or displaying a Nativity scene on government property at Christmas. The ACLU is dead wrong.
Dave Rothrock, Ripley

Taking the Ten Commandments and prayer out of our schools is what is wrong with our children and us today. Children killing each other, priest sodomizing, gay and lesbian. Open your eyes. This being done is not the cause of all this but it sure hasn't helped. Us as Christians who have salvation want America back!
TaWanna Teeters, Kenova

The Ten Commandments speaks of love and respect towards each other. It is our responsibility to make sure we instill this in our children. Maybe by posting The Ten Commandments the students will have that love and respect and possibily think about the choices they make in life.
Kathie DeCrease, Cross Lanes

Young people need unchanging standards in a changing world. Laws of human government have been built on these foundational commandments. They make sense because they were given by our Creator.
Mark Siers, Ripley

In schools were sex, violence, drugs, offensive language are acceptable mean things in a school. There is momental need to interdict some morals back into children. For a nation founded on the basic princples of God to turn its back on the creator would be mistake in which the ramfacations will be seen for years to come.
Aaron Pates, Charleston

Our Children would be more responsible, respectful and caring if there were God in schools, its like the plauge, we took God out of our school and since then social morals have gone down and crime rate in young people have gone up.
Autumn Carden, Glenville

Yes! The 10 Commandments should be posted and it should be the right to anyone who wants to display. It's the ACLU that is keeping things blown out of proportion. I grew up in school with the 10 Commandments and what's good for me is also good for my children and grandchildren.
Nellie, Charleston

The Ten Commandments are what we are taught whether Christians or not. The Commandments are not just spiritual, but also the morals we all wish to practice and teach our children.
P. Downey, St. Albans

I think it is a wonderful idea! All one has to do is look at the current situation in our public school system today to realize something is missing; a moral sense of right and wrong. Young people today need to know what the boundaries are in life. It doesn't get more black and white than the Ten Commandments.
Jason Hughes, St. Marys

By removing the Ten Commandments, They are depriving our children from good family morals!
Tyler's, Saint Albans

the ten commandments are perfect rules to live bywhether you are a christian or not. It could only help the world a better place to live. I t could not hurt. Our money says In God We TrustIf we would all honor the Ten Commanments, we would have less crime & more love.
Kaitlin Dail, Huntington

the kids need directions in there lives.if they would live by what the ten commandments. stood for we could sleep with our doors unlocked at night...again
Ronnie, Hurricane

Since the Ten Commandments are followed by both Christians and Jews they are exempt from the so called separation of church and state and our secular laws are based on them anyway.
James Owens, Red House

This country was founded on Biblical principals and the Ten Commandments was the foundation of law in this nation. Of course they should be posted. What possible harm could they cause? An increased awareness of morality? Would that be bad?
Linda Chatting, Cross Lanes

Yes I think the Ten Commandments should be posted in All the schools. What is wrong with good moral guidelines to follow?
Steven H., Elkview

Working in the public school system, it is apparent that moral corruption is at the root of many of the social problems experienced by today's young people. Historically, the 10 Commandments give a structure that enables our youth to understand right and wrong related to their everyday decision making.
Sue Peros, RN, MS, Ridgeview

The United States was founded on Christian principles and the 10 commandments are basic moral tenants that children should learn. The concept of separation of church and state is not within the constitution, the ACLU would like you to believe otherwise. If religion is a belief system, who protects us from government endorsed atheism? The belief that there is no God is as much a religion as the belief that there is a God.
Marc Crouse, Buffalo

As the moral fiber of our nation continues to erode, I applaud Manchin and anyone else who is not afraid to acknowledge the Ten Commandments as a practical way to begin to salvage our land. Religious implications aside, the Ten Commandments serve as the model for the most rudimentary of our laws, and familiarizing our students with the essence of decent human behavior can not be a bad idea.
Jason Underwood, Saint Albans

Good for Joe! Look at what's happening in our schools and communities today. We need the reminder that lying, stealing, killing, and cursing are wrong. What a better way than displaying the Ten Commandments where it could be seen every day.
Edwina Waybright, Ripley

the ten commandments are perfect rules to live bywhether you are a christian or not. It could only help the world a better place to live. I t could not hurt. Our money says In God We TrustIf we would all honor the Ten Commanments, we would have less crime & more love.
Kaitlin Dail, Huntington

It is time to make children aware that there is a higher power. With the busy life style of most parents, these morals are not nearly taught enough. Please bring back the morals that we and are fore-fathers so much lived by. If you question this, take a step back and ask yourself, what it will it hurt. If we can make one child a day think and question what they may be about to commit then we have accomplished what we sat out to do.
Judy Carr, Pinch

If children were taught the commandments I feel we would have less behavior problems in school.
Janet Jones, Dunbar

I don't really think they should be required but that if the schools choice is to post them for their students then they should be allowed to do so without contreversy.
Jamie Boggess, Nitro

The ten commandments should be posted in the public schools giving young children a good foundation to grow on. Once these beliefs are instilled in the young minds it will help solve selfishness of the fortunate to help the unfortunate overcome their needs!
Kelly, Charleston

I think that it might help kids with learning moral and ethical behavior. Kids today need more guidance to good behavior, because they get so much negative examples in society.
Angie, Liberty

In a few months, I will have to send my daughter off to spend most of her waking moments in one of our local public schools because I cannot afford to send her to a private school. I frightens me to think that our educational institutions and the ACLU would rather that our future leaders not be exposed to Thou Shalt Not Steal or Kill or Covet.
Stacie Boggess, Sissonville

If the ACLU wants to ban all referance to God, they are too late. Here's why: Our coins say In God We Trust, we sing God Bles America, we open each session in our government with prayer, we place our hands on the Bible when we take an oath, and on the Supreme Court wall lies the Ten Commandments; So why can't we put it in schools? There is no reason why we can't. No reason.
Jordan Richardson, Nitro

I do not feel that posting the Ten Commandments is violating the separation of church and state. This country was founded on the belief of God and all of our laws are based in the Ten Commandments. If anyone wants to completely separate church and state, we will have to do away with the Pledge of Alligence, the Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence.
John, Athens

I do not feel that public schools should be 'required' to post the Ten Commandments however I do think that if the student body of a school decides that they would like the Ten Commandments and or any other document that promotes a strong moral base then they should be allowed to do so via a vote among the student body.
James, Ripley

i think that with the killings and troubled children of our age we most definately need the ten commandments present. Not every child is taught of the ten commandments and our children need the proper guidence, after all they are the future of our country. why not let them learn from that which we base our laws. i think everyone would agree our children as well as parents and teachers, law enforcers etc...can use all the help they can get.
Jennifer, Chesapeake

I think the Ten Comandments imply good values, no matter your religion. If other religions have something similar, I would have no problme with it also being posted in schools.
Shawnda, Madison

Why not post them in our schools... they are posted in our United States Supreme Court! Why should we not tell kids NOT to lie, steal, or kill?
Adam W. Nester, Dunbar

Aside from the fact that I myself am a Christian, I believe that The Ten Commandments are a powerful reminder of basic principles by which every person should conduct themselves. By instilling these values in our children, we are insuring a more positive future for our state and our nation.
Lauren Walker, Milton

This issue is absurd and unfounded. Those commandments are just a part of biblical history from the Old testament, having lost their relevance upon the arrival of Jesus Christ in the New Testament who gave His only commandment to us to simply love one another
Mary, Nitro

Our children live in an uncertain world. A better way to help them cope in this day and age is to show them positive standards, like the Ten Commandments. This gives them good moral guidelines that will help build a strong foundation for their future roles in life.
Agina K. Schnell, Charleston

Schools should not be required to post the Commandments, but neither should they be denied this right. Biblical verses on government buildings is a practice as old as the nation. While we shouldn't deny other faiths their rights, at the same time we must admit that the faith that guided the Founding Fathers was Christianity, not Hinduism, Islam, or Wicca.
Charlie Read, Parkersburg

Not be required to ...but if the student body so elects to ...then they should be able to.
Jonathan Austin, Saint Albans

Absolutely!! If we follow the Ten Commandments we will have better students, teachers, administrators, and communities. Why not post and then enforce Do Not Steal, Do not Lie, Do not Covet, Do not commit adultery....-Can you imagine what a wonderul school it would be if these commandments were followed?
Jay Powell, St. Marys, WV

Controversy regarding church and state has been taken much too far. Perhaps it is a sign of the (declining) times in which we live. We as adults must teach children (by example) how to live life in a respectful, kind, generous and honest way. How confusing this controversy must be to young minds.
Joanne, Marmet

I believe in the Ten Commandments, but they DO NOT belong in the public school system! For someone serving the public and wanting to be Governor, he's not regarding the rights of others; not to mention the separation of church and state. He's very short sighted and disrespectful.
Donna Hark, Charleston

posting the ten commandments would be a step in the right direction in helping correct some of the concerns we as a state are facing. it seems our aclu friends are against anything that the majority of west virginis would support.
Greg Howard Sr., Huntington

When will God get fed up with the ALCU and these judges that try to tare down every mention of God. Of course the ten commandments should be put back in the schools They are the back bone of America. They are what all the laws hang on.
Carla Dailey, Bancroft, WV

I for see know big problem. After all it has nothing to do with religon at all. Religon forces you to serve and do.The ten commandments only ask us to do and live right. They serve as an example in good living. We each have the freedom in being and doing what we want.It only seems that some are condemned by them. Why they must ask their selves this question.
Sue Young, Elkview-W.Va

They also should have to know where they came from, and what there for! Parents also should be incouraged to post them at home if they really care about there children.
Richard & Tonya Meadows, Wharton

We don't want our goverment running our churches and we don't want our churches trying to run our govermnet. We tried that once and they crusafied jesus...
Johnny J., St. Albans

Yes!! I feel the 10 commandments should be placed in schools.. after all are not our NATIONS' laws base upon these 10 commandments How as a nation can we say they are no longer important and our children shouldn't learn the commandments.
Deanna, logan

Our country was founded on Christian faith. It's influence is found in the U.S. constitution, our court system, as well as on our currency. I don't think it's any coincidence that our country has experienced such success as a result. But we must continue our strong faith in the Lord and do God's work. It's our responsibility as Christians to spread His Word and His love.
Tom Lookabaugh, Ravenswood

Yes, schools need the 10 commandments because this nation was founded on God and we should not go away from that.
Cheryl Waugh, Charleston

Didn't we already go through this in Alabama? Regardless of what you think about it, the fact remains that it's unconstitutional and that viewpoint has just recently been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
M. Jones, Charleston

This is a tuff question.....required? No . Able to ? yes. This is a Democratic United States. As should be our schools. If they the students vote on and .....decide by a majority to ...or not to...that should be the answer to your question.
Jonathan Austin, Saint Albans

The TEN COMMANDMENTS should never have been taken out of schools!
Karen L.Booth, Cedar Grove

I think the Ten Commandments should be seen everywhere including schools and government buildings. If someone does not believe in the commandments then don't look at them. Do not take away the history of our great nation.
Angela Walters, Charleston

Ever since God had been taken out of schools morals and values are gone. Morals and manners are a thing of the past.
Janet Hall, Logan

I think that the Ten Commandments should be posted before someone decides to outlaw this too. It seems that in this day and time, that everything good and right is termed discriminatory and has to be outlawed. The way I see it is that if it is good enough for Jesus Christ, it should be good enough for all of us
Kammy Miller, Holden

The ACLU be dammed!
Timothy Hall, Logan

Why not? We vote in churches now. I think it is an abomination that God's Law is considered unconstitutional. The constitution is based on this law. If we obeyed God's law, this country would not be in the shape it is in today, that is to say, going to hell in a handbasket.
Mickey, Charleston

yes i think its a great idea the kids could learn a little about the principales this country was based on
Mike Durst, Point Pleasant

As a Registered Democrat, I was going to vote republican for Governer, to promote more wholesome values for the State of West Virginia, but Joe Manchin may have my attention with talk of this nature, if there ever was an education reform that's it.
Lee, Mingo County

If the morals of the Ten Commandments were written on a motivational poster, they would be posted in classrooms without objection. I think it is the title, and the association with God that is offensive - as it should be, just as light is offensive to darkness.
Mia Rucker, Nitro

These Commandments are what our country are founded on. Even if they weren't required to post them, the individual communities should have the rights to vote on wheather their schools will allow them to be available.
John Adkins, Wayne

It's a shame God ever got put out of public schools; it's high time he got put back in.
Brittany Minix, Salyersville

I feel that if they can teach my children about Buddhism. They can post the Ten Commandments. They are only posting them there not in there text books.
Kim, Davin

This nation was founded one nation under God. The reason we have laws is to keep the nonbelivers on the rightous path. Besides, if are to ashamed to fight for our heritage, beliefs, and way of life, how can we start to honor the Lord Jesus Christ and his sacrifices.
Nicole, Morgantown

The Ten Commandments are the foundation of our moral law. The ACLU's comments are a joke. They do nothing to help our problems. Their obsession with keeping God out of public life has created so many of the problems we have. What they call separation of church and state was about Thomas Jefferson speaking against Virginia imprisoning Baptist preachers because they were not sanctioned by the state church in Virginia.
Gregory R. Whitlow, Chattaroy

YES the 10 commandments should be allowed to be posted in school, courts, etc. P.S. look at the writing of our founding President George Washington what would he have said.
Larry Bryson, Charleston

one should study early history. early history will verify that our declaration of independence, and our bill of rights where founded upon the ten commandments, there will never be a separation of church and state for it is perpetual
Ronald & Gayle Finley, Williamson

i feel that since god gave us the ten commandments to live by that we should do our best to uphold these commandments. this is just what our schools need today.
Patricia Belcher, Mallory

The more of god's laws seen, the better quality of people we have. A little religion never harmed me when i went to school and church and helped to keep me out of trouble.
C Thorn, Parkersburg

Though I live in Ky, I think that our everyday lives are still based on the commandents.
Angela Hackney, Turkey Creek

I think this is a wonderfuk idea,i also believe that taking jesus completely out of schools is part of whats wrong with our kids today..i pray they do put it back. thanks for allowing me to give my view on this.
Brenda S Doss, Wharncliffe

The Ten Commandments should only be permitted to our public schools, not required.
Jeremiah Comer, Kenna

The Ten Commandments are basic moral principles that everyone should strive to uphold. While no one is perfect, if everyone would attempt to live with those principles in mind, the world would be a much safer and happier place to live. I see the posting of the Ten Commandments as a way to remind children how to change themselves and the world through better behavior toward God and to all fellow men.
Cate Brown, Summersville

We have a daughter who teaches at Duval. She says she can use all the help she can get. Posting the Ten Commandments is a step in the right direction.
Michael Tewart, Mexico Beach , Florida

I think that the Ten Commandments should be posted in West Virginia public schools because I personally think that every student in all schools should know about the Ten Commmandments and what they mean to us. There is so much violence in todays world that it is a shame to not have them in schools already.
Jessica Lane, Fola, West Virginia

It isn't so much a matter of being required as it is being Allowed! The Ten Commandments are the basis of our laws. The ACLU thinks everyone has liberty except Christians! I would like to see them learn to abide by majority preference! They want everyone to have a say as long as it agrees with their agenda, which is immoral and corrupt.
Mary E. Underwood, Cross Lanes

I don't feel that schools should require the posting, but I definately feel they should be allowed to post them without reprimand.
Kari J. Shank, Charleston

Joe Manchin has got bigger fish to fry. This has already been struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. What part about separation of church and state don't you people understand. I wouldn't expect any of my religion's texts to be plastered all over schools and government buildings. That's what CHURCHES are for. Posting the Ten Commandments in school is like saying; Freedom of religion as long as you're Christian! Everyone else ignore the constitution. You don't have any rights.
S. Kshirsagar

How would this not be a breach of the separation of church and state? This would be requiring the tenets of only certain religions to be displayed in public schools where everyone is supposed to feel welcome. As a Christian, I would like to suggest the posting of The Golden Rule, a moral principle that includes everyone.
Diane, Cool Ridge

If the Ten Commandments, a historical document, cannot be posted in public schools, then we shouldn't post the Constitution or Bill of Rights either. They are both peices of history and they should be treated the same. The majority of West Virginians feel they should be posted. I am tired of decisions being made by our government based on the opinions of the minority---let the majority rule. This is a democracy!
Shonda, South Charleston

I am a born again Christian. Therefore, I am totally for the Ten Commandments being posted in schools.
Renee, Red House

Your question is a leading question!!! Shame on you. The controversy is not whether a public entity should REQUIRE the posting; it is about whether a public entity is permitted to do so. So as to the question of being required, the answer, of course, is no. However, in answer to the REAL question of permitted, the answer is, of course, yes.
Sandy Hutchinson, Nitro

But if the local school want to put them up or allow a student group it should be allowed. We allow everthing else in our schools today in the name of education.
Dawson, st albans

I believe they should because that will spread the Word more. Some students may see them and say 'Hey that makes sense,' and turn to the Lord. Sparation of church and state is important, but no one would be forcing students to read the Ten Commandments.
Jamie, Glenville

I agree with Joe Manchin on this matter. After reading several books on Thomas Jefferson inc- luding his New Testament on Jesus, I believe that he is not really understood concerning Church and State.
William S Hart, South Charleston

The Ten Commandments are good and honorable. They are character building, something our children are dearly lacking today. If the parents are unable or unwilling to set forth standareds to live by, then surely it is our duty to help these children who otherwise will never know why or how to become someone respecting and respectable.
Sheila Chapman, Walton

It sure couldn't hurt. My friend has a child that goes to Ripley High School and there are more girls in physical fights than boys. Maybe if they would introduce some religion the kids wouldn't be so violent. It sure wouldn't hurt!
June, Ripley

The Ten Commandments should be posted. No one is being forced to read them. If you don't want to read them, then don't.
Smith, Barboursville

I personally think there's nothing wrong with having the 10 Commandments in schools and public buildings. I not sure if I agree that it should be a law mandating their display.
Mark Fulks, Charleston

I don't think they should be required to, but I think they should be allowed to if they want to. It should be up to the different schools.
Sheila Ganoe, Tornado

I think the reason things are so bad now is because of the lack of the ten commandments. This country was based formed on the religion and beliefs of our forefathers so why should it not be included. The schools used to use the bible to read by..
J Fisher, Bloomingrose

I fully support Joe Manchin's endorsement of posting the Ten Commandments in public schools if and when he's elected Governor. In my opinion, this wouldn't be forcing religious beliefs of any particular faith on any person. In today's society how can it do anything but help??? After all, when tragedy hits no one has a problem with gathering for prayer no matter whether it's in a state/county facility or not.
Cathy F., Hurricane

I feel that WV schools should not be REQUIRED to post the Ten Commandments, but I feel they should be allowed if they want to.
Amanda, Charleston

how can you teach Social Studies and American life by leaving out something that someone may not like. I want my children to know about all people and the things that shape our culture.
David White, Dunbar

I agree that the ten commandments should be posted. If you chhose not to read them or follow them then turn your head! I personally am not wanting to see girls in middle scholl walking through the halls holding hands but they continue to do so.
Stacy, Elkview

Schools could post the Ten Commandments along with key elements of other religions to accomodate children of other faiths.
D Jackson, Charleston, WV

Not even from a religious standpoint, the Ten Commandments offer excellent moral values for our children. I don't see that there is any harm in it.
Andrea, Alum Creek

We should not waste the State's limited resources and people's valuable time to pursue a policy that will be overturned by the Federal Courts. This is clear pandering to the religious right in WV.
Mike Adkins, Charleston

i think that we have stood back as christians and let our rights be taken away it's time we stand up and take our rights back!
John Fox, Jackson

I feel very strongly that the Ten Commandments should be posted in the schools, because the United States was founded on God, and without God, what do our children have to look forward to in the future.
Rhonda Syner, Ripley

I don't think schools should be REQUIRED to post the Ten Commandments, but they should be ALLOWED to if they want to.
Carol Mitchell Smith, PhD, Cross Lanes

Because this is what are great country was build on if it wasn't for God where would this country be.
Carolyn Coleman, OAk Hill

I agree the Ten Commandments should be posted. Educators today are designing programs to teach children manners and respect, when we get all that from the Ten Commandments. Don't design programs, use the ones God gave us.
Rebecca Knotts, Brenton

I agree, we need to start putting some kind of morals in our children today.
Norris Troney, Milton

I do not think they should be required to post the Ten Commandments, although I do think it's a good thing to do.
Jennifer Walker, Oak Hill

Our laws are founded in the Ten Commandments. Our country was established by God-fearing men and women and the United States has been blessed by God whether people want to admit it or not! Imagine how our schools and state would be if we all tried to follow the Ten Commandments! Well, we need to know what they are first!
eric taylor, Scott Depot

I don't think the Ten commandmnets should be required to be posted, however the right to post them if you so choose to do so, should not infringed by anyone.
Ronie Wheeler, Stoughton, WI

seperation of church and state. posting them will only encourage questions which will lead to explanation. I will teach my child about church. You give them education.
Jessica, Hurricane

Yes because children need exposure to the Bible. School may be their only exposure to religon. Follow parents' preference. Add with beginning term info.
Debra Bennett, Victor

Absolutely not! and I am a teacher who believes in separation of church and state. I attended public school when teachers who were self-described Christians posted all kinds of Biblical jargon and forced all students to say prayers that they deemed appropriate. If you didn't, you were called names and made to repeat a Christian prayer made up by the teacher.
Charlie Rose, Charleston

We spend so much time stressing all the don't rules in our schools. Such as harassment, bullying, drugs, tobacco. I am 100% for these rules. However, I think the Ten Commandments would be a positive set of rules to be displayed in the school. Perhaps it would remind our youth that these still apply in our society even though they may not see it in their home.
Becky, Scott Depot

Requirement, no. Opton to do so or any other text promoting moral good, most definitley.
David S., St. Albans

Questions of the separation of church and state aside, there is no way to justify the display of any one religious doctrine in public schools, unless all are represented. If Mr. Manchin is not prepared to see all religious beliefs expressed (even those he does not subscribe to) then he should not feel he has the right to force his viewpoint on others.
Debra Jarrett, Gassaway

It is a school not a church. If you want your children to learn religion, send them to church or to a church school. Public school is for everyone not just Christians.
Cheryl Adkins, Clendenin

Oh Praise GOD, YES!!! What could it hurt? It tells children to simply not kill, steal, etc. We teach them that anyway. And I tell you one more thing. Joe Manchin has got my vote. GO JOE!
Sheila Jude, Breeden

I believe parents should teach morals and schools should teach citizenship, tolerance and understanding of others.
D. Alt, Petersburg

I dont think so because there are alot of preople who dont belive in god and that will start something adn our schools will end up like columbind high nd that really scars other people adn some will be preaseure into either killing themselfs or others.
Jessica Anderson, Charleston

It would do no harm from a spiritual, educational, and historical perspecitive.
Richard D. Smith, New Matamoras, OH

Absolutely, everyone is entitled to their opinion and if we want the Ten Commandments in our schools then it should be allowed, if someone disagree's then tell them to look the other way.
Kristie Hill, Ripley

Yes, because a lot of our laws are based on the ten commandments and if we have to obey them we should see them everyday.
Beverly Sams, Bomont

It is wrong to require schools to post it, but I would see no harm in giving them the option to take to the parents and students so as not to start a lot of frivolous lawsuits.
Beth M., Charleston

Although I do believe in the lessons taught by them, I feel those are lessons best taught by the partents and church. Educators are not who I want my childten learning Gods 10 commandments from.
Shawn Cole, Ravenswood

I believe in the separation of church and state. I think it's okay if they want to post them (and allow people from other religions to post items important to them as well), but I think it's wrong for it to be a requirement.
Christy R., Charleston

What does the Ten Commandments have to do with kids in school? Kids need to hear the Ten Commandments in church and at home. What you need to do is bring back prayer in our schools it's obvious the majortiy of these kids are not hearing any, much less saying them.
Charlene Chandler, Charleston

Our current laws are based in the 'Ten Commandments'. They pertain to all with no bias toward anyone. The Commandments are a great history lesson.
Tracie Hickman, Rand

Maybe if they learned them, there would be less violence in the schools
Anna Kasuga, Groton, CT

I think it should be up to each school. They could hold a vote and the most vote win. For or against putting them up in the school.
Jackie Simmons, Charleston

It is human nature to disagree on just about everything, but trust me, do not turn your back on God.
Jason, Sissonville

This will intrude on our freedom of religion.
Kim, Hurricane

I say yes, that the West Virginia public schools, and for that matter, all public schools, should post the 10 Commandments because of truth in each one of the commandments! If one has a problem with the posting of The Ten Commandments, I say just don't read or heed it!! Thanks, Debora Roswell, NM
Debora Kidd, Roswell, NM

I think it should be the school's choice,,, but not be requred
Herb Bell, So. Charleston

I don't know so much about required, but allowed would be nice. I am a teacher, and one of our current requirements is to teach Character Education. We are basically asked to teach ethical behavior. Displays of proper behavior and societal expectancies would be good. These standards are useful, not just the Ten Commandments, but other documents as well.
Patricia Coulter, Clay

Posting the 10 Commandments gives the students who choose to read them, good moral values to review and hopefully stand by.
Tilah Fleming, Chapmanville

I beleive there just might be hope for the world yet! while he is at it let there be prayer time and bible study time.
Donald Withrow, Elkview

That is as much our heritage as Washington crossing the Delaware.
Marchetia Hawkins, Davin, WV

I simply feel church and school should be seperate. BUt i mostly looked for a way to e-mail your 11:PM news casters to say i feel it was a terrible lack of research for a professaly team to say catholics celebrated ash wednesday with ashes and some protestant churches had services without that is so wrong GO DO YOUR HOME WORK and please report accurtaly . I am lutherun. We have Service WITH ASHES and i bet you studies martin luter in school. A huge part of history , i am sure we are not alone in this. Bas reporting , bad out side story, and all together badly researched.
B Ren, Scott Depot

I agree that our children should be allowed to read the ten commandments on the walls of the schools in all states in our country, after all this country was founded on free dom of religion
Tammy Hughes, Eskdale

Public Schools should be allowed to post the 10 Commandments but only if they want to. I agree there is no harm in posting the 10 Commandments and that students could only benefit from them being posted, but I do not think that it is right to make them post the Commandments if they are not wanted by someone. If some want it and some do not, they should still be posted.

Yes I do believe our children should be able to read and learn the ten commandments. From the way young people have no value for human life or property, maybe if they learned at a early age that this were God's law first it may have more of a moral impact on our young people, because not all children have parents who teach them about God, His laws and His love for us.
Kathy Sloan, Charleston

What a ridiculous question. What is the point of posting the 10 Commandments in a PUBLIC School? It serves no purpose. It was during John Adam's administration that the Senate ratified the Treaty of Peace and Friendship, which states in Article XI that the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion. James Madison, fourth president and father of the Constitution, was not religious in any conventional sense. Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise. The 1st Amendment of the Constitution even states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion... Unfortuantly fanatics tend to get blind sided by feelings rather than reason and logic...SOS Manchin is just trying to court another electorate to get elected.
Tyler Oyler, Shepherdstown

I think people forget the real reason why the pilgrims came to America... It was to practice their religion (Christianity) in a free society... These are our GOD's commandments!
J. Donovan, Tad

Don't let the legistators vote on this matter it needs to be decided by the people of WV put it to the voters
Larry, Cabin Creek

This nation was founded on the princables of the bible and and most of our laws are influeced by the bible. The 10 commands are just a good format for sociaty to live by.And we West Virginians are God fearing people and proud of it!!!
Mitch Simpson, Oceana

Seperation of church and state...if you're going to post the 10 commandments you better post every other creed from every religion or there's going to be a whole lot of lawsuits
Jon, Charleston

When they took prayer out of the schools it seems that is when all the violence started in schools. the ten commandments couldnt hurt
Patty Frazier, Charleston

Our founding fathers incorparated this into our first schools. why not today as well?
Michael Estep, Alum Creek

That is part of the foundation this country is built on.

It is about time.
Paul Foster, Belle

Our Great Country was founded on God & the Ten Commandments! If something is not done to put God back in the lives of our children we are all going to continue to suffer.
Jean Zangari, Richwood

I don't think they should be Required, but they should be allowed to if they so choose!
Pat Dillon, Gallipolis, OH

They should, because even if they are in the bible (which I know people complain about), they are good things to follow.
Emily, Arthurdale

I am in total support of this legislation; for our country and state laws are based upon these Commandments.
Cerah Blanken, Logan

It is a sad day when we start taking God out of everything this country stands for. God has blessed America and we repay him by getting rid of his name and laws. All because of law loop holes so someone can make a fast dollar in court. Well this is only the worlds law but not Gods law. So I hope those you are offend by the Commandments tell God this on Judgement day and see what He thinks of your answer.
Joseph, Louisa

If a school wants to post the 10 Commandments, I think that is fine, but the government should not require it by law. Schools need more independence, not more government interference.
Bill Stephens, Charleston
