Has the strike against Kroger affected you?

A SAMPLING OF YOUR RESPONSES:

I miss the Kroger in Dunbar. Wal-Mart is not convenient for me to go to and it is way too crowded. Fas-Chek doesn't have everything I need.
Susan, Dunbar

I think Kroger should just take these stores and close all of them. They took their warehouse from charleston to Virginia as far as Im concerned they can take their stores there too. Lets get a Wallmart close to charleston and forget about Kroger.
Jim Cornell, Bloomingrose

Yes it has affected me. Two area stores, that were close to me, were close so that I had to go to an alternate store. (Fas Chek)
Wilbur Hines, Charleston

Yes it has, it has made me stop going to Kroger all together. why is that you ask? ill tell you why. someone like me, I have been looking for a job for 6 months. I resently went to school to get my CDL's and even though I have them, I still cant find a job. I have a girlfriend and she is pregnant. I even went to Kroger and put an application in. they never called. now, the reason this strike makes me sooo mad is cause they have jobs, they all have jops so that they can support there familys. there is someone like me who has tried to find a job can cant find one. then you have greedy people like them who have jobs, make money, and can support there family but yet they set outside and wont even work. I say if Kroger was smart they would hire more people like me and they should fire them greedy people standing outside doing nothing
Michael, Chapmanville

Prices was too high they can compete like the others can
Steve, Ripley

Kroger has the best variety of any of the stores around. I am not able to purchase the groceries from other stores that I can find at Kroger. Also Kroger's quality of meat is unsurpassed. We never buy our meat anywhere but Kroger. So, yes, it has definitely changed my buying habits and my eating habits. We are now forced to make due on whatever we can find at the other stores that is comparable to what we are looking for. Let's speak out and get our Kroger stores reopened.
Michelle Jamison, Roanoke

There is no variety at other stores. Kroger has the best quality and variety of meats
Suzie Facemire, Gassaway

I just move on to some other store
John Butler, Ridgeview

I never shopped at Kroger's, their prices are always higher than other stores.
Mark Fulks, Charleston

I would hate to see the Kroger stores close because the employees would loose their jobs, however if Kroger gives in to the employees and gives more benefits the Kroger stores will eventually go out of business due to people not shopping there because their prices would be even higher than they are now. I personally do not shop at Kroger because their prices are simply outrageous compared to Wal-Mart.
Michelle, Charleston

Not really- They already overprice most all their foods anyway. Other grocery stores in the area have better prices. I'd rather shop at Wal Mart any day- I'd save money and can get my cleaning supplies on the same trip.
Jenn, Nitro

I've started going to other stores and I'm buying products that I have never bought before. I think that the strike is making many people go to Wal-Mart and that may cause many people not to return to Kroger.
S. Burgess, Charleston, Wv

I have to travel further. Prices are higher and the product availability is no where near Kroger's variety. My local Quincy Ctr. Kroger employees are friendly, helpful.
Regina Breeden, Diamond

Im a college student, I work at Kroger over the summer. Although, Im not working there right now, im still greatly affected, considering my step-father works there. Its not easy. All the Kroger employees are asking for is to keep the benifits they have already been promised. This strike has lost the Kroger Co. way more money, than they would have, have they just let us keep our benifits. This strike is not only hurting the employees, its hurting the bussiness in small communities, as well as the Kroger Co.
Jasmine Bledsoe, Clendenin

I prefer to shop at my locally owned grocer who truly values my business and shows me by offering high quality food items at reasonable prices, and doesn't make me carry a Savings Card to get them. Kudos to Parkway!
Susan, St. Albans

I knew where everything was located and I bought mostly Kroger products. Now I don't have the privilege of going Krogering. I've been shopping at Walmart and it's frustrating because of inconvenient parking and the signs inside the store are small and difficult to read. I went shopping Wednesday and just as I got to the checkout the power went off in Gallipolis rendering the cash registers unworkable. I didn't get to take my groceries, because the checker couldn't check me out. I was very disappointed because I had several surprises in my buggy for my precious grandson. Now he won't get them.
Nancy Metz, Point Pleasant

I spend enough in 2 weeks to pay for one person,I thing Kroger, needs to pay better.
Carolyn Harley, Ravenswood

It means that my bussiness with Krogers has ended and if or when they re-open I will not do my shopping there. I live on the west side and two blocks from Krogers. Save-A-Lot is just a few blocks over. Really no big deal with me. It is much cheaper.
Shaun, Charleston

We have visited no less than 5 other different stores since Kroger's has closed to get food for a special diet. Only Walmart has Blue Bunny lite 85 yogurt. Big Bear's produce was good, but alas... We used to shop once a week. Now we go 3 times a week, usually to 3 different stores. Of course, we're lucky to have the other stores and we can find things about each one that we like.
Frani Fesenmaier, Charleston

There is too much competition out there to let one grocery chain change anyone's purchasing habits!
Donna Alexander, Paris, TN

My husband and I are both employed by Kroger, and have been since we were both 16 years old. (we are now 40 and 42) I have been afraid of a strike for quite some time, that is why I have been attending school in the evening, so that one day, only one of us would be dependent on Kroger for income. Unfortunately my fears became reality when we actually did go on strike. This is having a terrible financial effect on us, as we have always worked for Kroger, and really have no experience elsewhere. I am qualified for other jobs, (currently have a 4.0 gpa at school) but I really don't know where to begin. I will have to begin a job search very soon because unfortunately, our savings won't last forever. As much as I hate to admit it, there isn't another grocery store around that compares to Kroger, and I just love my job as the floral clerk, but I will miss it terribly, because if I am fortunate enough to find employment elsewhere, I will resign from Kroger, and stay at my new employer. It is very disappointing that we have been on strike this long. I have been to other grocery stores in the area, and the quality is just not as high as in Kroger. I also see no resolution to this strike in the near future.
Tonya Hannigan, Shrewsbury

It hasn't affected me dramatically, but there are things that I buy there that are usually cheaper than anywhere else in town. Soft drinks and gas are my main purchases. But, Wal Mart has sodas and Speedway honors the 6 cents per gallon discount.
Tina Newman, South Point

Can't get things I get there at other stores ,the ones in charge need to give the employees what they are trying to get ,the cost of everything has gone and it takes a lot to make they deserve what they are asking for.
Cleo Martin, Proctorville

I'm glad employees are standing up to Krogers. This is not the only company that has striked over health insurance. Shouldn't the government get involved? Where's Bob Wise throughout all this?
Wendy Armstrong, Belle

My husband has a food allergy and the Kroger Company has been most helpful in letting me know which of their products he is able to eat. However, the employees at the Kroger store that I do business at is one of the reasons that I frequent the store and I would never cross a picket line. I feel the employees are entitled to reasonable benefits and I also feel they are what makes the company.
Cindy Clark

i also like to say to the ones who won't settle this strike with your employees you better think twice as your customers might like going to the other stores once they get used to them and you'll be left out all together ,then where would you?they need and deserve it ,you both may end up losing if you wait to long but I blame you for not seeing the needs of these employees.
Cleo Martin, Proctorville

Though Kroger was not my only shopping place it was most convenient. I use both the bank and the pharmacy. Not having 24 hour access to a local store and my ATM really hurts. It stinks.
M. Martin, Charleston

I could care less if they never reopen. I will no longer be shopping at Krogers.
Montgomery

This strike is about pure greed on Krogers part. Why won't Kroger put back the 5 million they took out of the health and welfare plan last year? They told the employees then the plan was over funded. Strange don't you think.
Rod, Clendenin

With Wal-mart and other local stores raising there prices,it has affected alot of people. The day Kroger in Cross Lanes went on strike, local gas stations had a eight cents a gallon increase.
John Shue, Cross Lanes

I never shopped there anyway. So I don't care if they ever go back to work.
Susan, Kenna

I can't find everything I want at other stores.. Krogers is the only place I can find them. Now I'm doing without. Which now means I have to drive even father away from my home to go food shopping. It's Not fair!
Lynda, Walton

I now have to leave the town I live in to buy groceries. Those other stores are very crowded now due to the Kroger strike. Buying groceries has become a HUGE hassle !
Stan, Marmet

I hope that they stay out until they receive the benefits they deserve. And every Wal-Mart employee should help them out because they will receive a raise just not to go union.
George Smailes

I used to shop at Kroger and would stop in at all hours of the night. With no 24 hour alternative around, I have to make sure I have my groceries at night. Thanks to all the union punks who are making life difficult on the ordinary people. I'll never go back to that store unless they manage to deunionize and get rid of the virus invading the joint.
Dave, Proctorville

Kroger offers 8% medical increase. Union wants 25% Take the 8% and Kroger increase as medical costs increase. But only to a point. Reevaluate as time goes by. Come together. Without the company there is no union. They need each other. Both are losing.
James Parsons, Huntington

it really is tough I have to go to southridge
Paula Messer, Danville

Kroger had the best prices and the most friendly employees.
Jessica Ellis, East Bank

Kroger's closing isn't helping their employees seek whatever it is they're wanting, it's just losing them amazing levels of money. Their strike in Gassaway has just made Foodland in the same area extremely profitable, and caused public opinion to dip about the store.
Dave Ryan, Duck

was only store between work and home. now it takes my wife longer to get home.
Franklin Good, South Charleston

Seems like they would soon realize it is now going into the holiday seasons that they both could give a little. Its not what pleases all of us but most of us. Think of all the business you are giving away. If I have to go walmart to buy food for my family and there is a Krogers about four mile from me then I feel the respect for Kroger customers is low.
D.S.Smith, Elkview

With the Kroger stores closed the prices at Wal-Mart and Fascheck have gone up on an average of 50%!
JRBossie, Nitro

The employees are only hurting themselves by not agreeing on something! They too have to eat and if Krogers isn't open, then they're having to go to another place to buy groceries. If they would just sign an agreement, then there money could be helping fund the Insurance rather than some other companies pocket. I live in a small town and we have a new store where I can shop close to home, so I have learned to live without Krogers.
Nikki Williams, Montgomery

I buy fewer groceries because the other local grocery stores have limited selections of many items. I plan to shop out-of-town once a week if the strike continues. I hope the strike will be satisfactorily resolved for all parties very soon. The inconvenience for me as a shopper is nothing compared to the hardship those off work are experiencing. I spoke to a Kroger employee at a store that is open in the northern part of WV on the weekend. Those employees are watching this strike closely because the outcome here will greatly affect the contract negotiations they will enter for the stores in the northern part of WV in about one year.
J. Postlethwaite, Ripley

It is really hurting us here in Morgantown! The shelves of the opened grocery stores are empty and it is difficult to find simple things! I needed a cake mix to make my sons b-day cake last week and had to go to two different stores just to find a white cake mix! I can't imagine the impact it's having on the college students.
Tonya, Morgantown

Hi, well, it just has started to affect me and my family. We are from princeton and sence the princeton store has gone in the the rest of the them I will not cross the picket line. I respect that because they are fighting for their right too. As we are with a union with our work I respect them fighting for their lively hood too. I hope that they get what they are asking for. With them all the way.
Carol Tabor, Princeton

I really don't like going to Wal Mart standing in longer lines and bumping into people who are always standing arounding looking at the ceiling and they aren't necessarily buying anything thing. Plus their pork has too much salt in it. It's not as fresh as Kroger's.
Poindexter, St. Albans

They were way over priced. And this plus card what a way to raise prices then take them back to the regular prices with the card.. What a racket..
Buford, St Albans

I do my shopping at Wal-Mart.
Laureda Collier, Logan

Dont the union workers know health care is a problem no matter where you work, maybe they really dont want to work, maybe Krogers will go bankrupt and the all the workers can get welfare at least they would have their health care they want. And if they do reach a agreement lets all strike and noy shop at Krogers
Richard, Spencer

I haven't had to use a stupid card for a while.
Robert, Ashford

I have farther to travel to buy groceries. Also if I may comment, Kroger is a minimum wage type job more or less. Grocery baggers and cashiers normally work for minimum wage. Kroger gives insurance and other benefits! As bad as the economy is these days I can't believe these people would even walk out on their jobs. There are few jobs to be had in Ohio and West Virginia! I have a college degree and experience in Business Administration and have been in search of work since last February when the company Highlanders Alloys went on strike where I worked. Fortunately this week I have been picked up to work for my local H & R Branch, and to have been out of work for so long I am seeing the light and thankful to have a job. My point is; I found out how hard jobs are to come by in this area and I just can not see giving one up because my company asks to me to help pay for insurance. My god people what they ask isn't much. My husbands' employer at a local trucking company charges him $50 a week for health insurance. This is just my opinion here, take it for what you want. Unemployment doesn't last forever if you even get it strikers.
A. Greene, Pomeroy

Kroger is not the only game in town. They think they are but there not! I am totally against this strike. They should be greatful that they have jobs and should have never went on strike! We all want bigger and better things but in this day and age we should be thankful for what we have.
Terina Harkins, St. Albans

I do not usually shop at Kroger. Since Kroger has been on strike, it has caused the stores I usually shop at to be crowded and out of stock. Hopefully, Kroger will reopen soon, not just because I think the other stores need to be less crowded, but because there are customers out there loyal to Kroger that do not like to shop elsewhere. I might also add, I do support the people on strike that are fighting for what they deserve. Hopefully this will be resolved soon, for everybody's sake.
Kelly Pauley, Clendenin

There are some things only Kroger, especially the Ashton Place store, carries. I think a mediator is needed and I contacted my congressional representative's office by phone but have not been given any reply as of yet. A mediator can tell each party when they are being too stubborn.
John, South Charleston

I think they should take what they can and get back to work.
Terri, Charleston

I'm used to buying from Krogers and now im at a lost because I have went to three different stores and have decided I like Krogers meat the best and there is no other store that compares and I dont go often as I did because Krogers is closed.
Leslie Scudero, Elkview

After shopping at Big Bear and Foodland, I have come to the realization the Kroger is the only worthwhile Grocery store in Teays Valley. Walmart is the only other good grocery store, but it's all the way in Cross Lanes. I have decreased my shopping trips drastically.
Jamie McDaniel, Scott Depot

Kroger was an integral part of West Virginia, I really miss Krogers alot, and its getting hard my family, because the other store in our area was expensive and I rarely went there, now I am forced too, or dive 20 minutes away from where I live. We need our Krogers back.
Felicita Fataki, Teays Vallley

It has limited the shopping. Where I used to go buy for long stay I just stop by local convenient store and get exactly what I need. Krogers employee need to go back to work asap. There are plenty of people out there who are afraid to cross the line to get the medicines. I would love to have there job and pay only $350 a month for health insurance. I currently pay close to or over $500 monthly for health insurance. In this day and time they should be happy to even have a job. Making good money without any college education.
Jo, Charleston

I support the employees on this issue. Kroger shut down their stores to pressure the strikers, I believe this will back fire on them. It shows to what lengths big corporations will go to break a union.
Mary Ballard, Rand

Kroger needs to open back up. They have the best prices and better selection than any other grocery store around here. This strike is getting out of control, the workers are striking for something they are not going to get. Krogers is not going to budge in their offer. Everyone pays a co pay, why shouldnt they have to!
Charleston

I usually do not shop at Krogers, the prices are way to high. Save-a-lot,& food fair have much better prices.
Sandi Moore, Chesapeake

I can't find brands I want and it takes forever to get in & out of Wal-mart!
Lisa J Haddox-Heston, Chapmanville

We got walmart!
Gary Ferrell, Charleston

Never shopped Kroger in the past because the prices were too high then, and now sadly to say, alternative food stores have also raised prices. Where can we shop after this Kroger/Foodland price war is over? Shame on you, Foodland.
Debra Bennett

I live close to the Kroger at Riverwalk. It was so easy to run in an pick up a few things here and there between taking my son to school and picking him up. Now if I need something, I'm forced to go all the way to Wal-Mart at South Ridge... which I aviod as much as possible because it is so chaotic. At first, I supported the strikers at Kroger, but now I wish they would settle and go back to work. The quality of food at other stores just can't compete with Kroger and I would really like to begin shopping there again. Somewhere along the line, someone has to bend... I have a feeling that Kroger Stores won't be the bending party and striking employees will find themselves out of work for a long long time to come.
Tracy, South Charleston

Although I feel the strike is necessary for workers benefits, it has negatively impacted me in finding this I could only find there-like baby formula. I wish they could resolve the issues soon so other stores wouldn't be so crowded (even though I'm sure the other stores don't feel that way)!
V Smallridge, Hurricane

The strike of Krogers is affecting me and my family. My father of Marmet's Kroger is currently working there, he has worked at Krogers for the past 20 years. Personally in my opinion I think now that Krogers is on strike, they are losing more money now then if they would have just giving the Kroger employees what they wantin the first place.
Anonymus, Charleston

The strike has affected me in a way that I am actually saving money. I live roughly a mile away from the West Side Krogers in Charleston, and I used to go there at least 3 to 4 times a week. Sometimes more than once in one day. It was always for just 'one or two' items - but it always ended up to be more than I could carry. Now that I can't shop at Krogers, my grocery shopping has been limited to once a week at Wal-Mart, and at Fas Chek for bread, milk, essentials like that. I am for the strikers, and I feel that the powers that be at Krogers should give the workers what they are entitled to. But, on the other hand - I do hope that the strike ends soon.
Lisa L. James, Charleston

Krogers sucks..go to Walmart!
Ashley Deem, Chleyan

The Kroger strike has efected me because thy have all the stuff that Savealot and Walmart didn't have.
Shawn Buckner, Madison

I now have to spend a longer time at the grocery store trying to get around the crowds of people and then waiting in line for about 30 mins to an hour. Where I live there is only two grocery stores. With Krogers on strike makes me have to go to Charleston to get grocerys because they other store is to expensive. Krogers was convienent and now I have to go farther out of my way.
Kellie, Elkview

I'm dying here! I'm either going to starve or go bankrupt. I'm hooked (sadly) on many store brands or brands that other grocers don't have. The prices (sky-high) the quality (terrible) and the selections (or lack there-of) is just horrible.
E.J. Fox, South Charleston

It hasn't affected my habits, but as an employee of the store I know that it has affected the habits of not only my friends and neighbors, but my own mother and father. I would like to be able to tell all what it is for us to be out there every day, but I'm afraid most wouldn't listen.
Charlie Whitlow, Chesapeake

The strike against Kroger's has not really affected me. I have driven by the stores and have seen the picket lines...but other than that I have no involvement in it what so ever. I shop at Wal Mart.
Garrett Chain, Spencer

I want to go Krogering. I love the unlimited double cupons and the Kroger card savings. I hope they are back open before Christmas.
A West, Whitesville

I do not shop at Krogers because their prices are too high. However, since they are on strike it's made the stores I shop at more crowded and a hassle to shop. Krogers prices are already too high, just wait til after this strike.
Shelley, St. Albans

Yes, I am saving money by shopping elsewhere.
Neva Stuck, Nitro

Personally, I'm learning that it is economically profittable to drive the extra 30 miles, past Krogers, to get to the Super Wal-Mart. It's easier on the check book.
Chris Thomas, Gauley Bridge

Yes the Kroger store being closed has really effected my family. I live in the Montgomery area and the only store use to be Kroger which means we would have to drive to cedar grove to go shopping for food. I hope that it will end soon. But now we have a new store and I think that its beginning to make more money than Kroger ever did.
Raymond Barron Jr, Montgomery

Not in the least. I do most, if not all, of my shopping at Wal-Mart. They're only hurting themselves. Soon they'll start to complain about not having any money or food, and I will have no pity whatsoever.
Eric, Charleston, WV

Have noticed in Ripley the Wal-Mart store is now selling more food. Out much longer and I see a Super Wal-Mart going in.
Laura, Sandyville

Instead of asking Kroger employees to give up health benefits, we should be asking why other companies such as Wal-Mart aren't being forced to also provide benefits. It is called corporate greed and corporate welfare. Health care should be a basic human right.
Elaine Anderson, Charleston

I urge both sides to seriously consider the consequences of not getting these stores open. Small communities in WV depend on the Kroger stores, which in some cases are the only grocery store for miles. Many of the employees have worked there since high school and have no other training or experience. For me personally, it is costing me to shop elsewhere--the prices are higher and the selection is not as good of quality as Kroger-brand products. Please re-open soon!
Melda Brown, Sutton

Yes, I have not been able to find as nice a vegetables as we had from Kroger. I feel sorry for the Kroger company. Increasing health care costs have affected everyone, not just Kroger workers. Our health plan costs went up too, but, we are not striking!
Kimberly, Hurricane

I think that Kroger employees need to get up off there high horses and go back to work. they are making it inconvient on local shoppers. Now that we have to go out of our way to go to the store and we late night shoppers have to go 30 min. out of our way to do so at the not so local Wal-Mart
NA, Hurricane

I have to go to Save-A-Lot anyway I can't afford to go Krogering
Larry, Cabin Creek

It has not affected me because I don't shop there. And if they are worried about what kind of Christmas their children are going to have. They should get back to work!!!
Drew, Jackson County

Kroger employees are right to defend their own families and benefits, but they are destroying the wellbeing of other families. We are spending much more money at these other stores because we can't save at Kroger. It's really hurting others besides them!
Becky Carte, Charleston

With all Kroger stores now closed, I am forced to shop at Walmart. Walmart, along with all other grocery stores in the area, is extremely crowded with very long lines. It makes shopping a dreaded chore. I feel for all of the employees that have been FORCED to go on strike, and hope everything gets worked out soon for their sake and for the sake of their families.
Amy Siders, Charleston

I am an employee of Kroger, and usually buy all of my groceries there. I think that the general public is mis-informed about Kroger workers, and the reasons that we are on strike. We are definately not what anyone who has to work for a living would call overpaid, and we already pay for a lot of our medical coverage out of pocket. My family has rarely in the last fifteen years met our deductablethank GOD , and therefore we pay for almost all of our medical bills ourselves. Since we have been on strike I must not only find another place to buy my groceries, but may have to find another place to earn my living. Kroger giveth , Kroger taketh away!
Jeff Halstead, St. Albans

It has, because Foodland has raised their prices very high well more than they were it is rediculous.
Brian Goff, Charleston

How can it not when other store have jacked their prices up so high because they know you have to pay these outlandish prices or starve. It is all a scheme. Tell Krogers to pay the employees what they are worth so they can get back to work and give them the pay raise now before it is too late. Because if the other grogers raise their prices so high then Krogers will have to also to compete and this will make the pay raise worthless. This is all so worthless if you ask me Krogers can afford to pay more that what they are paying now. They want to line the pockets of all of the big wigs in the company like they always have and make the people who actually work for a living eat dirt. Whats going to change? Nothing if you ask me...
Sherry Lynch, Cross Lanes

Their prices have been to high for those of us on lower incomes.
W.D. Amick, Summersville

It is becoming easier and easier for me, my family, and my neighbors to never shop again at Krogers even if the strike is settled. This has created a major inconvenience for many of us. Although we have friends that work there we now feel like we will never return to that chain again.
Jim Gore Jr, Belle

we need to support the workers in there quest to obtain a fair contract
Cliff, Charleston

I have shopped at Krogers for no less than 25 years and will greatly miss them if they are forced to close. What is extremely frustrating is that the media does a very poor job of informing the public where negotiations stand and therefore I just keep holding out in hopes of them reopening rather than picking a new grocery to buy from. What is the status as of today?
Pam Hagedorn, Morgantown

I can't use my Kroger card and I have to drive twice as far to get to a Big Bear Store. Also, the Kroger gas stations have always saved me money, and I am being forced to go to higher priced competition.
Kim, Huntington

I lived in Barboursville West Virginia and went to Kroger to buy food. But I will not shop there ever again but I have had to go out of my way to get stuff at the store. In a year or so there will be 2 superwalmarts open with in 10 miles so i'll go there. I dont tel employes at Kroger should get med. insurence because I work 60 hours a week and don't get it so why should they.
Mr. Myers, Barboursville

I'm afraid they will, lose their jobs in the long run, and then all of us lose and we will have to shop in places that are too small to handle the volume
Helen J Miller, Charleston

The Kroger's strike nor would a Wal-Mart strike have an affect on my food buying habits. I shop at the Capital Market for FRESH meats, vegetables, and wine. Perhaps more consumers should get back to the basics.
Kathy Saul, Charleston

Now that Krogers has been closed,I have to travel all the way to Wal-Mart in Cross Lanes to get baby formual. None of the smaller stores I live around don't have it.
Colenna, St. Albans

Doesn't bother me at all. I used to shop Parkersburg's SouthSide Kroger, but due to the extremely long lines, or going in to shop in the evening and there not being a single clerk to check me out - I had already stopped shopping there.
Mike Spark, Parkersburg

Krogers is the most expensive grocery store in the area, and I would much rather shop at Wal-Mart where I can expect the lowest prices.
S Hughes, Charleston
