A SAMPLING OF YOUR RESPONSES:

I think the labor unions in retail service tend to be counter-productive.
D. Spotts, Huntington
Union representation for workers is always better for the employees.
C E Stephens, Charleston
Unions are the down fall of West Virginia now.
Mike Proctor, Pinch
No i was a non union employee at Meijer. we were treated better that the union employees. Look @ kroger there employees are unionized. 90% of the kroger employees make minium wage with no benifits! Twent hours a week if you are lucky! This is a union. YOU would be better off without one! Looks to me like the only ones who are making money at kroger is the union!
Clifton Jackman, Huntingtion
I've watched unions drive the cost of goods up to get higher wages and now the average person can't afford to buy those goods. Unions are causing more harm than good. If Wal Mart goes union, they'll be the next Hill's, OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!!
Dennis Johnson, Huntington
No question about it. We need a voice in our stores open door policy does not and has not worked from what I see
Ray Hanam, Elwood
I do not believe that the workers need a union. And they do have a good benefits package. But if walmart is claiming that the organizers were trespassing, than i must be trespassing when i shop there as well.
Tim Carpenter, Ripley
Wal-Mart is indeed very sneaky & underhanded in their efforts to keep a union out of their stores. They pay very low wages, offer health ins. that is waaay to expensive for associates to be able to get, due to the low pay. So,in effect they have no health ins. They offer very little in real benefits. There has been a study showing that a Wal-Mart worker CANNOT get by, even shopping AT Wal-Mart! Their company policies change like the wind. They make you fear for your job if the word union is even spoken!
APPLEMAN, Withheld,for fear of retaliation
for one thing wal-mar wouldn't be able to take the bonus money from the employees to pay for the community gifts Wal_Mat donates in their name to get another star in their hatI'm they could get better and cheaper insurance
Jerry Hannigan, Evans
I've worked in places that had a union in place. I never thought it did nayone any good. Just had to pay more money out of our pockets for the union to be there. Never felt it protected me or helped me in anyway shape or form.
Lois, Va. Beach, VA
Walmart and sams club need a union, work there a while and you would understand why. Promotions are based mostly on favortism. Pay rates and raises are kept secret because they often come without merit. Wal-marts has had an ongoing campaing against unions for several years, through its management being handed talking points from the home office in ark. The mgrs pass this criticism of unions on to the hourly workers in meetings and casual conversation. It has worked to some degree because alot of workers dont know whether they want a union or not but they should be given the opportunity to vote.
D. Stone
Employees are free people. They can discuss things with management for themselves. If they don't like what management has to say, the employees have a right to go get another job, in the same way that management can fire the employees. Unions do nothing more than suck up money from employees, and management has to pay employees more so these union dues are covered, thus the costs are passed on to the consumers. Just say no to the union!
Dave McWhorter, Proctorville, OH
Yes, I do think walmart should join a union i've worked for them. once or twice in my life and everytime they treat you unfair with out breaks sometimes or lunches. so maybe this will shake them up.
Kathy Workman, Charleston
All labor needs to unionize to have fair wages and retirement and health insurance. Also to have a strong voice on labor issues.
Paul Nelson, Racine, WV
WV should be a right to work state and unions are a thing of the past, all they want are the dues to supply thier favorite political topic
John Doe, Clendenin
Since Wal Mart is one of the top companies in the United States, the employees should have a bigger cut of their pie. Wal Mart makes billions, while paying their employees a very low, part time salary while Wal Mart just gets larger and larger.
Susan
Wal-Mart employees would defintely be better off with union representation. Wal-Mart, as a business, is no different than major grocery store chains, whose employees are represented by a union. With union represenation the employees will be paid equally across the board, the work environment (and shopping environment for customers) will improve, and the relationship between management and employees will improve. I can think of no reason why Wal-Mart would not want to accept this, except to continue paying very low wages to the people who are keeping their stores operating.
Shannon Woodruff, Anchorage, Alaska
No because i have work with walmart for three year in west virginia and virginia and i think union will just be more problems.
Holbert, Jacksonville NC
Ask Krogers employees, they don't seem as happy in their jobs as Walmart people are. Just my take on it as being a shopper.
Woodrums Bass, 'trophy material trainee', South Charleston
i feel that walmart should have a union to protect it's workers from certain abuses. they have too much power and should be brought down to a humbled level so that they do not think they can do what they want to their workers and expect to get away wih it .if a union will help bring them down to size then i say yes to unionization of all walmarts.
monique, paris
Walmart already has good benefits and decent pay for their employees. Contrary to what the Union organizers will tell the Walmart employees, the only people that really benefit from a Union are the Union management. Ask the Union to see a financial statement sometime.
Glen Cook, Poca, WV
If they unionized, it would be the start of the down-fall of Wal-Mart. Look at all the unionized companys in the USA and how many of the companys have moved to third world countries. Don't do it!
Richard Worthley, Peru, ME
Unions only make matters worse
Connie, Webster Springs
I think they are already getting the benefits and pay that other stores do not.
b. hamilton, redhous
I personally have worked for wal-mart for the past 13 years. Wal-mart associates do not need a union to give our money to,we do just fine without them. They are a great company with excellent benefits.
Kathy Case, Summersville
It would destroy Wal-Mart, raise prices for consumers, and customer service would be terrrible. After all, once those lazy workers have the union on their side, productivity will be replaced by smoke breaks!
Tom Roten, Huntington, WV
Unions suck and should all fold up. they just cost to much money and rip off union members.
Joe, Cape Coral, Fl.
It is time for the workers to unite and take back the power they once posessed when unions were strong.
Sheryl S Johnson, Charleston
Yes, as a coalminers daughter - I highly urge and respect the union. Look at what some companies do when you get hired - you sign a quit slip at the time of employment and you have no one to stand up for you for you rights if you get fired for something thats not right. In the union you do at least have the right to fight and the people to back you without hiring a lawyer.
Debbie Halstead, Boone county
I am normally opposed to unions, but I feel Walmart needs one. They are very abusive and un-reasonable with their employees. They pay low wages. They use intimidation tactics. They drill in the employees head from day one that unions are bad. They use scare tactics to stop employees from even thinking about a union. During your first day at work you are made to watch a film on why unions are bad for Walmart and Walmart's employees. This type of slave labor is bad for West Virginia.
J Simmons, Scott Depot
I have worked at the Charleston, WV Store for over 7 years and they treat us like we are idiots! There is no opportunity for advancement if your not sleeping with someone. Get a union in this place!
Cashier, Charleston, WV
Unions ae why WV looses so mant opportunities for new companies to come into the state. What more could Wal-Mart employees ask for-no other comapny that is primarily entyry level/blu collar employer comes closr to what Wal-Mart offers employees!
