A SAMPLING OF YOUR RESPONSES:

They shouldn't be paying for any medical treatment that is continuing the inmate's life. After all, why should he continue living since he had no apparent regard for anyone else's life? Give him the death sentence that he deserves. End of problem!
Concerned Citizen, Charleston
Why should someone in that position be given treatment at the cost to us.
Tim Shanks, St. Marys
I can't even believe this would be questioned. Why give an organ to a convicted killer who is sentenced to death anyway. This makes absolutely no sense! Where has our common sense gone!!
Debbie, Charleston
Shouldn't be getting dialysis either. He's on death row for one reason - to die. Let nature help the justice system.
J.D. Thompson, Clendenin
this person is on death row, why does anyone even need to ask this question??? My goodness, there are children and deserving people waiting for these organs that will Die waiting for them!! Sometimes I just have to stop and ask myself what is this world coming too?!
Toni Buzzard, Leon
NO! NO! He shouldn't even be given dialysis. These prisoners on death row for years after their crime is sad. They are wasting taxpayers money and the laws need to be changed!
Carolyn Tierney, Scott Depot
And that just shows how badly our system has gone awry.
A. Fannin, Isonville
I don't see a choice to make. I think God has already made a choice for this prisoner.
Cheryl Stover, Point Pleasant, WV
Absolutly not. The person is on death row to die for what they did. Why should the state or Federal Government be responsible for keeping a person on death row alive? There are many people that contribute to society that are in need of a organ transplants and should be way up on the list. A person on death row should not even make the list
Paul Hartling, Hurricane, WV
I had 2 uncles and a grandmother to die with kidney deseases and there was no talk of transplants.
Maria Lambert, Seth
I don't think the inmate should get the transplant!! This is so unfair, when there are other people on a waiting list for transplants, As you stated transplants are priceless!!!!!
Charlotte, Suisun, Ca
Why would anyone even ask this question? it should go to someone and can lead a productive life a child or someone who is worthy.
Alicia, Humphreys
I think that a kidney should go to someone who is not in jail. If there is not a suitable donor then give to the inmate. But it should go to a person not in prison.
Judy Hatcher, Jacksonville
If he is on death row, I say stop the diaysis and let God take his life. Then there is nobody that can say that the justice system was doing something unjust by putting this individual to death.
Wes Harvey, Ripley
I think such transplants should be reserved for those who are depending on them for a longer life, and may still be in the work force, as a producgive individual, evidently the death row inmate should not, (in my opinion receive any organ transplant).
Laureda Collier, Logan
When a person commits a crime so horrible that they are to be put on death row, they lose their right to any priviledges, the state could save some money by stopping dialysis, they could save 120,000 a year and not have to pay for an execution. Hard working citizens in wv cant afford benefits, therefore also dialysis, so why should a convicted murderer get more rights than law abiding citizens!?
Sharolyn Johnson, Clayton, NC
No!! They spend to much time on death Row, it is just a burden for us tax payers. If a person is sentenced to death that order should be carried out within the same year. If we still had public execution on the court house lawn, the crime rate in the U.S. I think would take a drop!
Richard Turner, Comfort
That should be one more right they give up for being a criminal. Too many good people have died waiting for transplants.
Leisa, Charleston
Death row means death not life
tony gallagher, Gallipolis
I do not agree with the death penalty so I do feel that a deathrow inmate has the right to receive the same medical treatment just like anyone else. If we say that an individual on deathrow should not receive a needed organ transplant, we are playing God just as we are when that individual is put to death by the government.
D Jett, Dunbar
If he's on death row, they should just let him die.
Dustin, Hurricane
No way should prison inmates be eligible for any sort of tranplants, they no doubt should be on the lowest end of the totem pole.
d. alexander, Paris, TN
I think that the inmate should absolutely not receive the kidney. So many people who are law abiding citizens and productive members of society are waiting for life saving transplants and aren't getting them because of lack of insurance or money. Why is it that we have millions of dollars to provide life insurance for convicted killers but not for children? Where is the sense in that. If there were any justice, when a person takes the life and rigts away from another person, and is convicted, they should be required to become an organ donor.
Lisa McKibben, Elkton, MD
Hes the one who committed the crime and so hes the one that should pay for it. Why should they prolong his life? and what has he done for this great nation any way?. What they need to do with that money is fix there roads or give to the homeless.
Scott, CL,Wv
He is a human just like everyone
Brad Williams, Matewan Wv
He had no reguard for taking another life, why should he be given another chance at life when he dont deserve it.If there were lots of kidneys for everyone that needs a transplant then he should get it but there isnt so give it to someone that has more to offer than be on death row. He is gonna die anyway so why take away a kidney from someone that needs it and give to someone on death row. Dont make sense to do that. Here he is a convicted murder and he would possibly get the transplant faster than a smoker needing it they would not get it because they smoke. They talk about saving money well they could save money and give the kidney to a more deserving person by caring out his conviction and put him to death.
donna, st albans
Why should you give something so valuable to someone who is waiting to die anyways. this person has no chance of having a real life, so why not give it to a child or someone who is in need of it.
angela hackney, belfry
Death Row inmates should be at the bottom of the list to get a life saving organ. Although the real question here is why is it costing the state $10,000 per month to administer dialysis to a single prisoner? Seems excessive, even by Gvt. standards.
Andy L., Charleston
Is it necessary to make someone suffer more? We, as decent human beings, need to uphold a humane way of life. We need to take it upon ourselves to save EVERY human life, no matter whom may want to seek revenge, or take it upon themselves to say who is more worthy than others. WE ARE ALL WORTHY. We call ourselves civilized yet we still kill people. What kind of a civilized land do we live in where we execute people for mistakes in their lives, and send others to prison for life for stealing a loaf of bread?
Lori Sapp, South Charleston
They shouldn't get the chance to get a kidney transplant or dialysis!
Jessica, Charleston
In fact it should be the other way around. When some one is in prison and sentenced to the death penality they should be parted out just like an old car that is off to the junk yard. Testing them to make sure they are healthy and not abusing drugs might cost a bit but to save a GOOD LIFE or a family person would be well worth it. Why give them the juice and waste precious vital organs.
Kelly L. Tillis, Cross Lanes, WV
When a person is sentenced to death they have given up their rights to an organ transplant, organ transplants should be restricted to law-abiding u.s. citizens. criminals are given too many rights already.
Mark Fulks, Charleston
I don't think he should get the kidney. People in prison all ready get to many things that that law-abiding people don't get. They get cable TV, a gym to work out,(which is not good, the stronger they are the more diffcult to control), free food, free college education. Why give some one on death row a gift of longer life, when there is someone out there that could make a great difference in this world then a life of crime.
Christina Summers, Kenna
Absolutely not, by being convicted this person has given up their rights to pursue medical care oh his own. As the responsibility of a state, the state has no obligation to puruse this life saving medical treatment.Use the $$ for someone deserving, especially if this denies a good person the chance to live.Use that kidney for someone else.
Gwen Marshall, Morgantown, WV
Jees Awmighty! Aren't there hundreds if not thousands of non-murderers waiting for transplants? Preposterous! Enough of that madness!
Larry Weeks, Cleveland OH
It's not worth robbing someone of life to give the kidney to a death-row murderer. I'd hate to think that a decent law-abiding person could lose a chance to live over this.
David Keel, Houston, TX
The idea of a person on death row (They are there for a reason - hello!!) should be the recipient of an organ transplant is ludicrous. These procedures should only be done for people who have some purpose in life other than destruction.
Carol Curtis, San Francisco
No transplant, no dialysis is a win-win situation. The deathrow inmate gets to die of natural causes and society saves money and effort
Steve Harden, Houston, Texas
absolutely not!
Pam Tyree, Helena, MT
I think they should go ahead and let him die !
Martin, Madison
This is absurd on the face of it.
Lloyd, Ledyard
Not only would it be robbing a decent person of a chance at life, that same decent person would be sentenced to paying 120,000.00 a year for dialysis. If the decent person didn't have the 120,000.00 for the dialysis, would the state sentence the decent person to death or would they pay the decent person's tab for dialysis?
Sally Smith,
Only as a last resort and organ from another animal would be nice.
Billy Buzzard, Sylvester WV.
His death sentence should be carried out and he should be executed, thus, ending the costs associated with his care! He forfeitd his life when he took away the life of another.
Constance Ryan-McKenna, Vallejo, CA
Why should someone who has taken one's life be able to take a kidney which in turn may kill another.
Jeff King, D.C.
He lost his right to that kidney when he murdered an innocent person. I am not saying he should be denied health care but there are many other people in this country who value life and deserve a second chance. We can clearly see that this person does not value life becasue he did not hesitate to take it.
Rachel Brown, Belle, WV
He is currently serving a death-row sentence, but what if he were eventually found innocent??? That is a long shot, but stranger things have happened.
Angela, Parkersburg
No, unless he can raise the money himself/herself to pay for it; or his family does so.The possibility of the inmate being the only donor match to receive at that time might enable him to a new lease on life behind bars.He certainly shouldn't be first in line ahead of someone who isn't incarcerated.
Beverly Grey, Montgomery
They should remove the organs that he has for others who would add quality to life and the world. He had his chance and threw his rights away when he committed his crime and was sentenced.
W. D. Jenkins, Charleston, WV
Why pay out good money for someone who thought little of taking someone elses life.Maybe one of his own family members may want to donate one of their kidneys..
Sharon Clark, Dunbar
The choice should be simple. No way would i even consider this a question. Plus they need to stop the dialysis. Why waste more taxpayers money. I work to hard to pay somebody else's medical bill.
Rob, St Albans
Im sure someone else that is not in prison needs one more than him. Someone with a wife and family.
Kelli Asbury, Charleston
Why pay all that money when he is going to be put to death anyway. They should give the good kidney to someone not on death row. If his crime was bad enough for death row, I think the state should save some money and not even give him dialysis. Let nature take its course.
Rhonda, Montgomery
Hell no. The constant rain and humidity in Oregon must be affecting their brains.
Richard Rosenberg, New York
He or She has no right to life if they are in prison no matter the situation. They have bee excluded from all situations and should die a miserable death.
Eric Lusk, Oceana
As the fiancee of a Deputy Sheriff (Indian River Co. FL) that was killed in the line of duty, shot four times in the back by a repeat felon that was out on early release... I say NO !! Perhaps a decent person that respects the law, a parent or a child could use this precious organ. I'm sick as hell of the 'kid glove treatment' the deathrow inmates get to Protect THEIR Rights. As far as I am concerned, when this inmate TOOK a life.... he gave up ALL Rights.
Brenda Wittern-Schurman, Huntington
Certainly law-abiding people should get first chance at an organ donation. I am sure there are law-abiding citizens that can't afford the cost of dialysis, yet inmates get the best care money can buy. What a shame for states to have to pay for all these medical proceedures for people serving life terms in prison. Kinda makes the death penalty seem like a pretty good solution, hmmm?
Toni, Mount Nebo
Just because someone is on Death Row does not mean that person is guilty of the crime. Over 10% of the country's D.R. populations has been released over the past 5 years because of bad evidence, dirty prosecuters and officials that have manipulated circumstantial information to have someone found guilty of a crime.
J Goff, Dunbar
No it should go to a good honest, indevidual who deserves it and deserves a second chance at life.
Sandra Myers, Winfield
He should be a organ doanar but never a reciepiant.
Dave Thomas, South Charleston
I cannot believe someone is actually considering giving this person a new life when he insanely took another. NO! He should NOT get a chance at life! Unhook the dialysis, too! Jeez, what are you people thinking?? These are the tax dollars we're talking about here. Think about it.
Tamm, Northville, MI
NO! Absolutely not.He does not deserve to be saved. Murderers do not have the right to live in my opinion.
Brandee Boggs, South Charleston
I think it is a waste of a good kidney to give it to a person who was convicted of a crime and sentenced to death. There are people all over the U.S. who are waiting for a kidney to save thier life or the life of thier child, and I am appaled that one might be provided to an inmate to preserve his/her life. This person not only does not deserve the kidney, I mean what have they ever doen to deserve to live, but the state should also stop paying for the dialysis that is keeping this cretin alive.
April, Madison WV
He's on DEATH ROW for killing someone....give the kidney to someone else.
A. Caplinger, Ravenswood
He's gonna die any way why not let him die naturaly as most law abiding people does my parents could not afford a heart transplant why should he
Vinton Holley, Burnt House
Why save his life now only to take it later. After all he is on death row. And I think they should stop the dialysis too.
Blanche Cote, Jackson Nebraska Formerly Elkins W V
I have got an idea. Lets make 2 lists one for people who need a transplant, but who are not in jail, and one for those who are in jail. Once we get to the end of the first list, we will see what we can do about the other.
Ryan D. Cutright, Elkins
I think that they are on death row and they should die as soon as possible. There are good God fearing people out here waiting for kidney transplants that should get them.
Linda Pipinos, dunbar
They should step up his execusion. This would save money and let a law abiding citizen get a chance at a better life.
Kathy McCormick, Dunbar
He needs the chair!
Kelli R. Schoolcraft, Charleston
And they should take him off dialysis, move up any appeals he may have left and carry out the sentence before they waste any further resources on this leach on society.
Bob, Columbus, OH
A death-row inmate should not receive a transplant unless it is a living-donor situation that someone has volunteered for. A transplant is a gift of life, the very thing that the inmate had no regards for when doing his crime. My brother-in-law had waited 2 years for a liver transplant and it only took place thanks to his mother who donated 60% of her liver to him. Should an inmate who is waiting for execution be given a precious organ while a 21yr old decent tax paying man dies waiting for one? Of course not.
Angela Miller, Wallback
I am a 20 year old wife of a liver transplant recipient. My husband has suffered for over two years and just received his transplant due to a living donor. He could possibly be gone by now if it wouldn't have been for the Living Donor option. I do not think that a convict on DEATH ROW should receive a cadaveric liver when there are many, many people out there who do not drink, smoke or damage their bodily organs whom need the transplant for a long, healthy, vital life. Please make this point known! Thank You.
Elisha Teel, Walton
Not only should he NOT get an organ that could save the life of a HUMAN BEING, there should not have been one PENNY wasted on dialysis! It seems NATURE was trying to do what the court system should have long ago... eliminate this blight on society.
Mark, Parkersburg
Law-abiding citizens should be more of a priority than a convict. In a sense, prisoners asked to be locked up, decent people didn't asked to be sentenced to a killer disease!!!
Brian Elkins, Hewett, WV
Why should he get the transplant when he is on death row? It dont make since to give the transplant then the inmate be put to death for murder, sorry to be so blunt but he is on death row for a reason let him die.
Kelly Kelly, Charleston
If he is on death roll why waste an organ if they are going to kill him anyway.
Susie, Logan
Him to kill another innocent person by taking their kidney.
Gene M. Youngpeter, Lima, OH
give it to someone who and nerver commited a crime...a person in prison should not get anything other than 3 meals a day...
Becky Ray, Harrisville
Get on with the completion of the sentencing...death. Waste no more state tax paying citizens monies. How stupid are we????
Kathy Saul, Charleston
Yes, but only if there is no one ahead on the waiting list for the organ. It's the only decent thing to do. Murderer or not, he's a human, and if you vote to discard him like trash... guess what that makes you?
Greg Dudding, Huntington
Because they are taking the kidney away from somebody who could use it that is free, and should be able to live longer, Plus why would we use the tax payers money to keep someone on death row alive.
Vicki Church, Alloy, WV
This is a convicted murderer, right? On death row, right? So forget the kidney transplant, forget the dialsis, forget the cost of whatever method of death the state of Oregon uses. Give him, or her a comfortable bed, and a Bible.
Hope Vaughan, Duck
I don't see why any state would do something like that let that person in prision fend for his self he took a life now let nature take it's course
Smartin, Lyons MI
Why does the state even provide dialysis? Just let the person die. The victim did not have a choice. Why should he?
Judy, Charleston, WV
Not no, but HELL NO!
John Rude, Houston, Texas
In my opinion they should pay for dialysis because even though the murderer is on death row he is a person, and you cannot put a price on life. I believe that the transplant should go towards someone who deserves it.
Laureena Johnson, Huntington, WV
Absolutely not! I think they should take the inmates organs. If they are still good for anything!
Steve, Amma
If he is on death row you would think he would not have long to live why not save money quit dialysis and give the kidney to someone who deserves it..
sun shine, parkersburg
Just stop the dialisis and let him be. He didnt have a heart or care when he took the life of another. By giving him a transplant he is yet again taking a life from another by not giving a decent person a chance for a better life.
John, Red House
IN the Bible, God told us we must forgive others for the things they do against us if we expect to recieve forgiveness for the sins we commit. I realize this inmate took a precious life from this world...some ones son or daughter, perhaps even some ones father or mother, and this would be a difficult choice to make in any mans eyes. But, this is when we as believers and christians are put to the test. Do we give yet another time to some one that has hurt us, or do we let him die as a demonstration of our self justice. We forgive yet again and realize this too is another precious life, however wrong at times or misled it may have become.
