EYEWITNESS NEWS NEWSCASTERS

Question of the Day
EYEWITNESS NEWS QUESTION OF THE DAY RESPONSE

Does the New York Times reporters fabricating news and taking quotes out of context cause you to question whether other newspapers are accurate and truthful?

92% Yes:
Yes Votes
8% No:
No Votes

A SAMPLING OF YOUR RESPONSES:

Do not beleave everything that you read or hear
Don Hackworth, Prestonsburg,Ky

It isn't just that,I have questioned a lot of media reports.
Tim Shanks, St. Marys

No, not all reporters are unethical. Do they teach ethics in journalism?
Jackie, Elkview

I don,t trust liberal media outlets they cut the news out that don,t fit there agenda of changing america to there point of view, and i beleve that political correctness is killing our nation
Mike Cochran, Faribault,Minnesota

I have seen many of newspaper reports innacurate. Both in this state and in other ares. Most commonly, reporters misquote or fabricate a quote from sources in the story.
Not Given, Ravenswood, WV

Yes, but why did you limit you're question to newspapers? Do you think other forms of media have higher standards?
Mark

I think all news people do too much taking things out and adding things to make them sound the way they want.
B Hamilton

The collumnists are under so much pressure to get a scoop on somebody, anybody, that sometimes to get that extra edge, they will flub a quote or even make up one. This happens all the time at different newspapers across the country, this poor fella that works for the times just got caught. He had plagerized so many articles and had even gotten promoted! But, like so many others before him and to come, he got to fat and lazy in his work and was figured out. This guy should never be able to work for a newspaper again in that capacity again. This is rediculous, and shouldn't be tolerated!
Johnny Sayre, Charleston

I am appalled that a reporter would od such a thing. I see that as the same as a doctor making a false diagnosis. But it has long been my beleif that reporters are lax in their presentation of te facts. Every time I read a story about something I have knowledge of there is always an error.
James E Lowe PA-C, Beckley WV

For a long while I have felt that news is fabricated and biased. They go for ratings, not TRUTH.
P. Taylor, Ashland

No, no news is perfect news. We can't be 100% accurate in news reporting, and, as Americans and Christians in our faith, we have a right to a personal opinion on the issue as do others.
Betty Janice Dooley, Charleston

I must add that I already knew the NY Times was untruthful; its news stories are tailored to fit a certain, predetermined agenda, so fabrications are commonplace.
P Williams, Lucasville OH

I put very little stock in newspapers. Thanks to the advances on the internet, I make informed decisions on selected topics by researching through various medias.
Jim, Zephyrhills

Your question itself is hopelessly biased. Who says protesting sex discrimination at the Masters golf tournament is silly? Maureen Dowd's quote was basically the same as the president's quote. I experienced first hand how your television station distorted an anti-war rally, so I'd be careful abot throwing stones at all newspapers. By the way, who writes these questions?
John, Charleston

I feel that the newspeople need to be very careful about reporting to us the correct news and only that news--not fiction. We depend on their accurate reporting, not their feelings, perceptions, or other personal ideas about their story. All newspapers should have the feeling of Without, or with, offense to friend or foe, I sketch my world exactly as it goes. There are several newspapers with this motto and it should be the overwhelming motto of all newspapers or any other printed publications that give us news.
Judith Skidmore, Charleston, WV

But it is NOT new news. I usually think twice about what I read in the papers, especially the Gazette. Most slant the news to their own particular philosophy. Facts just seem to get in the way.
Sandra Hutchinson, Nitro

Haven't trusted the news media in years because they are to bias in their so called coverage
Larry W. Cox, Hedgesville

Much of the news today is manufactured in the political views of the reporter, editor and station/business policies. The final story reflects their policital correctness/attitudes and it oftentimes overshadows even the substance of the story itself. They also take political/poetic license in describing how far-reaching the effects of the story extend. For example, if you audit each sentence spoken or printed for accuracy, you will often hear/read phrases like ..many of the neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc..said this or that. This is based on the reporter talking to a few available passers-by, onlookers, etc. The reports try to give the impression that the whole town, neighborhood, etc., felt one way or another when what they should correctly say is something like two of the three people we spoke to said.... It is grossly inaccurate to try to project the whole town or neighborhood/locale's views based on conversations with two or three people. I w! ould like to see such statements as many, most, etc., in the media challenged for a week and an expose' published as to how accurate or misleading they have been. I strongly believe that such an expose would send most of the media back to reporting facts and get them out of the manufacturing business even though the manufacturing process probably produces more interesting stories. The news should report the news, not make it. Thank you for your time.
Larry L. Gray, Waldorf, Maryland

Believe half of what you see and none of what you read
katie, Buffalo

I get most of my news from the Internet, I even research the news you have on. looks like you are a little bias against Israel.
Heike Perez, Nitro WV

No because it's the same as any other newspaper article..
Katherine, Deseronto

What happened to management oversight before this story went to the press? Does this make an entry level reporter the new editor?
Ronald C Krause Jr, Charleston

I thought this about all types of news media before the Times case. You should always question information and check its source.
Ben Beakes, Cross Lanes

No one should ever assume an individual has credibility solely because of his job title ~ be he reporter, priest or hold elected office, which of course means all news should be viewed with some skepticism.
C. L. Quigley, Elkview

It certainly does. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Anytime you can watch fox news and see that we are winning the war in iraq, then you see on cnn that the war is not going well, the public is not dumb. The public knows to take media coverage with a grain of salt. Closer to home how come the Gazette backs one candidate, while the Daily Mail backs the other. The public knows the same people own both papers.
Mark Fulks, Charleston

I never take news from the NY Times, ABC, WCHS or anywhere else at face value. All news is subjective.
Joe Plattner, Seattle

I'm surprised you'd ask this question, considering you guys do the same thing all the time. For example, Haberly's stories. She's awful!
Jeff Packard, Nitro

I believe that those thoughts have always been in the back of american minds. It happens all around the world, so why not here?
Tracy, Nitro

I have problems with reporters anyway. They are always trying to out do each other. I don't believe much of anything they say.
Linda Bricker, Charleston

The Gazette editors are a disgrace to humanity!!!
S. M., Charleston

Just from personal experience, I can definitely say that Charleston Newspapers does not necessarily tell the truth. Their writers are biased pigs. I could say alot more, but I will keep it short and sweet.
Frendlee Calvert, Charleston
