A SAMPLING OF YOUR RESPONSES:

ABSOLUTELY.. without question.. not only POW/MIAs but also anyone who serves in our military always putting their life on the line to protect our freedom. If they never worked again we would still be getting a bargain.
Debbie Ashby, Alkol
absolutely, the courage and sacrifice an ordeal such as being taken prisoner in battle is more than reason to afford these service members our heart felt appreciation. payment could be by special changes in the g.i. bill system.
J.R.S., Santa Maria
Every POW or MIA that returns should be granted a full scholarship with all expenses paid to the finest colleges and universities that we have to offer. Have they not all earned it? Our tax dollars would be better spent at home, on our own struggling families, especially in Appalachia, where the need is great. Long live ALL of our military men and women who put their lives on the line for our freedoms. We owe them our lives and appreciation.
Shelly Dickens, Van, WV
We should honor our MIA...POW service people. If they indeed are working toward the goal of an eductation and that being the main reason for joining the service, we should thank them for giving of themselves..all our service people should be honored somehow...some way...POW and MIA people have gone beyond the call of duty...beyond just doing their job. We should always honor them in our hearts and our prayers.
Jan Potts,
I think it's great that these colleges are recognizing that it's troops like Jessica that keep America's freedom. Go WVU and Marshall!
Jennifer, Duck
i think that after all she has went through over there, a scholarship for her is the minimal reward that she deserves she deserves so much more. Im so thankful that she is alive, it proves that miracles do happen. and we hope and pray that they are more miracles to come. all of the POW's and MIa's deserve scholarships. and I think that the way to pay for them is to quit sending our money to Russia and Iraq and turkey and all the other countrys that support terrorism and start taking care of our own people.
Tammy Collins, logan
I think all that come back and want an education should get one free. After all, they went the extra mile to help all of us, we should help them in return. As to the payment plan...I'm not sure how that should be handled, but there are ways to do it.They always find ways to make us pay for all the things they want that really are not needed or unwanted. Why not for once in the history of our government, make a good suggestion for something that is needed.Help those who are fighting for us all.
Jon, Madison, W.Va
That's the least we can do for their sacrifice!!
Kim, Charleston
POW's should recieve free education because they have paid a huge price to allow the colleges to still exist. Free tuition is the least schools could do for them
Haywood Jablome, Chapmanville
The schools shouldn't pay for their edu. The us government should. I only wish that the troops of the vietnam era had been offered the same. Of course i wish they had been given the support that this generation of troops are.
Michael Carroll, Huntington
Yes, This little braveheart went out to defend a country and fell prey to terrible men. She needs all the support and help she can get. She still ins't out of the woods yet. She may never be the same again. My prayers our with hear and her whole family.
Bev Graham, Scott Depot
I think it is a very good idea. The schools, I'm sure could find a way to pay for the scholarships. After all look at all of the money that goes into the athletic programs.
Paul Bowles, Sebring, Fl
I don't know whether they should receive a free education or not, but they could get help...A lot of the MIAs & POWs joined to get an education from the Army. They could def. get the help.
Jessica, Charleston
We give free rides to athletes, many of whom underappreciate or overtly disdain the value of higher education. Most never take studies seriously or get a degree. Why not offer POWs and returned MIAs at least a partial, if not free ride. I do not support this war, but I support U.S. and British kids (and that's what they are).
Dan Roth, Pittsburgh, Pa.
No, they should offer scholarships to every US soldier that has put his or her life on the line to defend this great country!
Cam Matheny, Ripley
I believe that everyone that serves in our armed forces, especially during times of war, deserves a scholarship. It's the least we can do to thank them for their bravery and sacrifice. There has to be some ridiculous study or program the government can take money from to provide some assistance to the schools.
Stephanie Adkins, Dixie
They should because if they are brave enough to risk their lives especially the way she did they should be compensated.
Terri, Left Hand
For what POWs and MIA's go through... a free education is the least we could do for them.
Bev Tafoya, Olympia WA
I don't think that is fair, I fell terrible for them, but they should not get treated any different then the other soldiers.
Ashley, Fillmore, Utah
I believe the special offers should be left up to the institution. Our governments do a very good job supporting our fine combat veterans through the Veterans Administration. The government will assist veterans with a variety of grants to include higher education. In this case, I respect the extraordinary sacrifice that Jessica made and the decisions of the institutions. (You go girl.)
William M., S. Chas
Each year colleges and universities award scholarships to individuals for various reasons. I don't see any reason why they can't award someone who has been a POW a scholarship. It is a way to say, Thank you, we appreciate what you did for our country.
R Cox, Gallipolis, Ohio
Jessi is a lucky lady today. She should have her scholarships because that what she was there for and helping take care of are people . I am glad they found her when they did. Thanks jessica
Kay Gadd, Huber Heights Ohio
Of course they should! What makes her any different or more special than any of the other POW's or MIA's!! They found a way to give her a free education. They can find a way for the others.
Shelly Larabee, Hurricane
I think that is a tough question to answer. Jessica is special. She was one of our first, and gone for days. But to be fair to all of our GREAT SOLDIERS, that have served they should get the same treatment. As for the funds, where do the funds for the Promise Scholorships come from. Use those. Also, the colege can use these as tax deductions.
Pam Pfost, Charleston
It doesn't matter how the schools come up with the money. I would think the government would pay the full ride for any school in the country. The pow or mia has already paid their part.
Jim Nelson, Madison
yes i believe they all should recieve a free education thats the least we could do for them because there doing alot more for us there over there fighting taking a risk for the united states
shawn stines, beckley
Regardless of circuimstances involved. As a standard procedure, all pows are reviewed by the goverment. Moreover, specific dstailes of their captivity should be limited to the public for security purposes. Therefore, as an option by the state and government, all persons who were active during militaey action should be given equal opportunity to further their education and to own realestate. Although, the g.I. Bill comes into play here, they have cut back a lot of assistance to veterans since the 1970's. As you are aware, it is extreamly difficult for younger individuals to begin providing for families with help. I realize pfc jessica has experienced a terrible ordeal. However, we should remember others also who have sacrifaced their lives for our country. However, i do believe jessica should be specifically compensated for her pain, suffering, and potential emotional problems. Let's hope the conflict in iraq ends soon.
Mark A. Clay, Huntington
You better believe it. How else can we thank our POW's? This is the least our state can do show their appreciation to those brave soilders who risked their happiness, comfort, and families to make sure we go home everyday to our families. Yes, it was their choice but what a brave one.
Teresa Howell former Man, WV resident, Charleston, SC
she put her life on the line for her country and every citizen that lives free, she diserves everything we can give her,Pfc.Jessica Lynch is an AMERICAN HERO.
Mike Cochran, Faribault,Minnesota
They should cover the cost of room and board, books, and any funds need to ensure they can complete the course and recieve their degree. These people are what makes America. Show the respect that they deserve, all of them.
Jackie Rose, Culloden
I think they should if there going over to help protect our country we should help them to get a education they need.
Barrett Family, Logan Wva
Also, I think every child that loses a parent in this war should be given a free college education. If the college is offering Jessica a free education, they will find a way to make it a write-off.
LS Parsley
If one does they all should.
Candice, Richwood, WV
as far as that goes...they should have free healthcare and interest free home louns...were would we be without them???
Robert Vandenberg, Charleston,wv
this is an exceptional case in all means
Brian Holbert (Active Duty Navy), Elizabeth WV
Well, some sort of scholarship should be offered, from some source, to every man and woman who serves in the US Armed Forces.
Ross A. Muscato, North Easton
Pary of inlisting in the military is the benifits of free college. That should be enough. Why should the schools offer them anything?
Nan
They could set up a fund into which individuals and corporations can make non-taxable, charitable contributions.
Cate Brown, Summersville
I am very pleased that she was found alive and is able to return to her home. Jessica is a solider who was doing her duty; just like every other solider over there. Showing her favoritism is not right nor fair to all the other soliders who are bravier and have given much more than she has. She is a solider no matter what her field who was doing her duty.
Cindy Rae Cooke, Lillydale, WV
refugee's are given educations so why should'n the people who volunter to serve our country and become aPOW orMIA be rewarded with this small token of our appreciation for keeping us safe and free.
Gleeda Plank, Hornell N.Y.
I was in Viet Nam and all we got was spit at and called names when we came home.they are doing the job they signed up for. let the military pay for there college education through the G.I. bill
clarence hill, st.albans
This is the least we can do for the men and women that risk their lives to save ours.
Wendy Armstrong, Belle
They are willing to fight for this country, and they shall receive all the support that they can get from us. Some of the soliders are joining to get the money to attend college. Come on America, give these people what they deserve
Terri, Belleville IL
I think schools should do that. If they want to go back to school. I think it woulb be a great way to say thank you.
Lewis Hilton, Syracuse, Ohio
WVU and Marshall provide numerous athletic scholarships, it would seem that providing a POW or MIA a full scholarship would pale in compairson to a full athletic scholarship (and I would think would be less expensive when you take into account all the extra's that come into being for an athlete on scholarship. By the way, I am a stauch supporter of most all sports.
L. Hatfield, Sophia, WV
Who is paying for it. The collages or the people. They will just raise the collages fees. The kids will end up paying higher prices. They will get their from the grovement like they are promised when they sign up for the army. Do we the people have to pay for everything. Their is kids working 30 hour a week. And going to full time collage. I don't think they can handle very much more.
Stover, Pt.Pleasant
I believe that if schools are willing to pay for military people to attend school for free, why not the people who can't afford the schooling but want to better themselves? Don't get me wrong I am happy that Jessica is home alive and may God bless her and her family, but what about us? There are some of us afraid of going into the services. We are afraid we will never see our families again. Yet, when you go into the service, you get free schooling? I honestly don't think that it is fair. Does that mean that if any of us are injured in the War with Iraq that we will get free scholarships? If so, where is the money coming from? Please send best wishes and happiness to the family of Jessica.
Tammy F., Portland
One day war will become obsolete, maybe all returning pow's should be teachers, and as how to pay for their education, maybe (we) war protesters could fund them, there's enough of us.
Roger Nester, Man,WV.
I think jessica should good school in wv at marshall and god with heR
Thomas McComas JR, logan
Just because what they go through.
Pam Wheatley, Logan
Absolutely!!
Frances Adams, Milton
Every male and female that are 18 yrs. old in the United States should be required to serve 2 yrs. in any branch of military that they choose. Upon completing the 2 yrs. of required service, the United States government should be required to pay for 2 yrs. of college to the veteran to any college that they choose to attend.
Bruce Nelson, Jr., Madison
I think that if our POWs/MIAs are fortunate enough to make it back from the hands of our enemies then yes they should be given a full scholarship and allow them to become whatever they want to be. They were there to fight for our freedom and they sacrificed not only their well-being but they had to leave loved ones behind to be there fighting for us. There is no doubt in my mind that they suffer immensely at the hands of their captors. They deserve so much for their bravery and courage. A scholarship from the school of their choice is a small token of appreciation for what they have endured for us! There are not that many that make it back unfortunately so I feel that each college could offer at least one POW/MIA a full scholarship. Schools get federal and state grants as well as private donations so I am sure that they can afford to do this for someone so deserving!!
Bonnie Simpson, Cannelton
As a Marine veteran I think that all POW or MIA that are found and returned should be given something special like a full scholarship to help them along. We as a nation should feel that nothing given to a veteran is too great or too big and donations would not be a bad idea either.
Marc Midkiff, Huntington
I think they deserve it, after what they have sacrificed for us!!
Toni Buzzard, Leon
These men and women are fighting for our country in order that others can attend school. If the true desire is there then I do feel that this is the least our country can do for the POW's and MIA's.
Cathy Proctor, Charleston
Yes, we need to do all we can at the moment it happens to secure the mental health of all our Pows and a free education is a great way to start. By solicitation of the Public or through property taxes so all Americans could help.
Robert E Gilkeson, Beaver
They should at least pay what the military doesn't, so that the entire cost will be covered. Isn't that the least we/they can do?
Leesa Kemp, Elkview
I think the colleges should set aside a special recognition scholarship that recognizes special people and heros such as Jessica Lynch. She served in the military to help keep americans safe from terriorism and she almost died because of it. Being able to live through her ordeal is a miracle. GOD spared Jessie for a reason, and in return I think our State should do everything in its power to help fullfill her dream of becoming a school teacher.
Sheila Tetoff, Seth, WV
They risked thier life for the freedom. They deserve such an education. Set up a POW fund. American will donate.
Libo, Sun
Yes, how would schools pay for it? Don't we still have a GI bill still in place?
Sandra Hutchinson, Nitro
Every POW and MIA should receive a full scholarship. They have given their mental health for the protection of our freedom. Anybody who has been captured and/or tormented is going to have nightmares the rest of their lives. Just speak to any survivor and they will let you know. Why else do you think Jessica was trying to hide under a sheet? She was terrified. All schools and universities receive donations from past alumni and this money could be used to provide full scholarships for these returning heros.
Alice Griffin, Reno, NV
I'm glad that Jessica was found alive but there are more people fighting in the war besides her. What about the people who died fighting this war, what are we doing for their families???? People are donating money for Jessica but the army is paying all medical bills, she has a free vacation, a full scholarship, a new car, a pension for the rest of her life and who knows what else. There are others in this war besides Jessica, let's remember them too!
P. Stewart, Ravenswood
Yes, I think if a POW or MIA wants to go to school they should be able to. I mean, they went over there and fought for our country, risking their lives for us to have freedom. I think it would be a great payback to them to send them to school if that is what they want to do. Because I'm sure that Jessica probably joined the military so that she when she got out, she would be able to go to college through the GI Bill. It was her dream to go to school, and I think she should be able to have that dream since she risked her life to protect our country!
Stacey Hilton, Syracuse, Ohio
If they are in the service, they already qualify for the government to pay for their education.
Vicki Church, Alloy, WV
I think it would be nice to do that and also ofer the service men and women a big discount on theirs
Gary Davis, Cabin Creek
If they are going to do it for one they need to do it for all.
R. Myers, Pt.Pleasant
Predident Bush, on behalf of the U.S. Congress and a grateful nation, should award PFC Jessica Lynch the Congressional Medal of Honor. Not because she single-handedly eliminated many of the enemy and not because she single-handedly saved the lives of many of her comrades. But to restore some measure of her honor, dignity and self-respect so rudely and maliciously taken from her by the apparent methodic mutilation of her body while held captive. For me, and I'm certain many others, this beautiful young woman and courageous soldier is the perfect example of a heroine. On my list of heroes, I place Jessica ahead of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt abd Elizabeth Dole.
Thomas Byrd, Garden Grove, California
schools give full scholarships to ball players every year, and what do we get from them? a few hours of intertanment, and what does a pow or mia give us? A LIFE TIME OF FREEDOM!
Nancy Harper, Clendenin
Even though they have been through a rough time they shouldn't get any more special treatment than all the other possible students.
Zach Ashworth, Scott Depot
If POW's put there life on the line we as a nation need to take care of them.
Jeffery D. Naylor, Elkview WV
It would depend on the situation and not in her's. The hero's are the ones saving lives. All she did was save her own a**!
Dan,
I think no because if i want to go to college i have to pay for my schooling and the military of enough money to go to college. I have some friends that went to college on Gibill.
Jeff Gilkeson, Craigsville W.VA.
She knew what she was doing. She got paid for it. It would be great if all schools were free of charge like they have it in Europe. That would mean our gas would be more expensive though.
Jon House, Huntington
Absolutey - what more could someone do to earn the country's gratitude?
Pamela J. Collins, Summersville
The people of Iraq have been oppressed for far too long by a dictator whom used the profits from the people's oil to fund his own life style and neglect the individuals. It is our duty, both morally and as fellow humans to provide the Iraqi people with some of the necessities of everyday life until they are able to rebuild thier nation, government and lives.
Denver Gandee, Jr., Spencer, WV
IF they are brave enough to go over there and fight, they deserve it!
Rachel Leftwich, Elizabeth
Dont they get a free education anyway?
Mel Gil, Chas
Yes definitly, everyone who risked their lives for us need a education paid for along with Jessica.
Helen Hill, Leroy, WV
A portion of the lottery $$$$ could help pay for this.
Jackie Winberg, Scott Depot, WV
As high as it is to get an education, the schools can well afford to give a scholarship to the people who risks their lives so that the rest of us can live in freedom, without fear of an attack.
Melissa Purkey, Anderson
Anyone who has suffered and given up part of their life for their country definitely deserves a reward and if they want an education they should have it. We can pay for that like everything else, with our tax dollars. I would much prefer to see my taxes spent on something like that instead of other things we are forced to support through our taxes.
Paula Bland, Charleston, WV
These are all heros We should be taking care of all our vets.
Linda Bricker, Charleton
It is the least we can do for our special veterans.
John H. Kozak, Charleston
There will not be a large number of POW's and MIA's so the cost per school would be minimal in comparison to their budgets. Most of them could take a few thousand from their sports department.
Shawnee Phillips, St Albans
Yes I certainly think they should but shouldn't the Gov. pay for their education I thought that was what the G.I. Bill was for. If not then let the State or Universities pay for it these young men & women have sure earned it.
Shirley, Culloden,WV
I think every POW, or MIA that returns should be offered a scholarship, especialy if they are trying to become teachers. The Federal Government should provide the funding for these programs, or to reimburse each state if they provide funds for such a program.
Dave Meade, Varney, WV
for all they do for this country i think all active duty members should get something for it
crystal, charleston
I think this is something very rewarding every home state should do this for all of the pows and the mia's.
Sugar Painter, Dorothy Wv
Every veteran should receive the opportunity of a free post-secondary education (college isn't for everyone). These folks deserve the thanks of a grateful nation! POW/MIAs deserve much more, as do the families of those KIA. Optional contributions via the 1040 such as we now have for Presidential election funding should suffice.
Gregory Hayes, Nitro
Jessica is truly an exception! That young girl, who was fighting for us, has been through so much. We can only imagine what she went through for 8 or 9 days, laying with all her broken bones, pain and suffering, no food, no water, then on top of that, knowing she was all alone with her Company members burried around her. She hung in there, not knowing what the next minute held, rescue or death. I so admire her. She is so deserving!
Lisa Flocker, Worthington
She will certainly have the means through the military to get that education from disability compensation, etc. I think it is a great gesture for university to make, but worry it might become in some cases, a publicity/public relations advantage for the university.
Jeanne, Boone NC
Not only should they recieve it but every military man or woman in combat should.
Sarah Tagayun
It is sad what happened to Jessica but if everyone in that situation got a scholarship then people would join wars to get a free college education. People are already joining to Army for that reason. Do we actually want people to join just so they can get caught to get a scholarship? We as a nation cannot afford that.
Crystal Lesher, Clendenin
