Question of the Day
EYEWITNESS NEWS QUESTION OF THE DAY RESPONSE

The W.Va. Senate Finance Committee unaimously approved a bill requiring women to wait 24 hours before getting an abortion. What do you think?

73% Yes:
Yes Votes
27% No:
No Votes

A SAMPLING OF YOUR RESPONSES:

Freedom of choice
Cloyd Thorn, Parkersburg

This is a step in the right direction. I don't care how you look at it, abortion is the destruction of human life.
Gordon Harvey, Van, WV

If the pro-choice movement is so in favor of choice, then why are they threatened by allowing women the time to make a sound, informed, choice when it comes to abortion?
MaryBeth York, Larkspur

I believe this will make women less likely to make a rash an irreversable decision.
Cate Brown, Charleston

Yes, I think the fact that the maintainer of this web site cannot even spell the word unanimously correctly should get him or her fired. Thousands of people visit this site daily, and all of them now think less of WCHS. How about a little bit of professionalism?
Daniel Reed, Cross Lanes

I agree that a womans body should be in complete control of her, even when it comes to an abortion. But I myself do not agree at all with abortion.I think taking a life is taking a life...no matter how small or old that life may be.But every one has their own opinions about that. The question as to them having to wait 24 hours before an abortion can be done...I agree.Every woman needs to weigh the facts and risks, and a few minutes in a waiting room of a clinic is not enough, especially considering the stress most all of them have to be under at that time. This would maybe even give them time to decide other alternitives as to allowing the child to be born and placed with another loving family that so long have wanted a chance to have a child.
Marlena, Danville

It's the womans decision to have an abortion ... even if I don't believe in them. But if there is a waiting period to own a gun, then for goodness sakes, put one on ending a childs life!!
Jon, Danville, W.Va

Well Praise the Lord for this. I think Abortion should be banned altogether, but this is a huge step in the right direction. This bill may save thousands of babies lives. I am all for it. Thankyou Senate Committee. I am very proud of you for this. St. Luke 1:41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
Sheila Jude, Kermit

People sometimes don't understand what their options are. Maybe the information the abortion providers are forced to give, along with the waiting time, will make them see their choices.
Suzette Lowe, Spencer, WV

Well if a drunk driver went out and wrecked into a pregnant woman and they charge him with murder of her and her unborn child, right then the state is admitting the child is a life so that makes abortion murder no matter how you look at it.
Scott M, Charleston

Abortion kills too many of our children daily. The waiting period may help some of these women realize the mistake they are making and consider a better alternative, adoption!
Shelby, Charleston

Abortion is wrong no matter what. I think it should be treated as murder. No matter what anybody says, it is a living organism. An innocent baby is being killed because the people involved do not want to take responsibility for their actions.
Kelly Pauley, Clendenin

Praise God!!!
Sheila Ganoe, Tornado

Woman have a right to choose without interference.
Cheryl Hall, South Charleston

Sometimes people make rash decisions before actually thinking it through and having a waiting period would be a good idea. A women should have time to really think about the decisions she is making and look at all the options.
Jessica Snyder, Frederick

Absolutely, alot of women are not aware of the possible options available to them instead of abortion. If I had my way, and I am sure more people feel this way too, I would away with abortions altogether. At least this might help prevent some of the haneous acts.
Chuck Adams, Chapmanville

I think it is a good idea for women to have to wait 24 hours because it gives them time to really think about what they are about to do. They can't do it on a spur of the moment thought. If they are that certain of their decision, then one day should not make that much of a deal.
Brandi Moss, Charleston

A woman making a decision to have an abortion has probably been thinking about nothing else for days. Why do they need another 24 hours. If 24 hours too much to ask, maybe not, but will it change anything. not likely.
Larry Kendall, Huntington

All abortions are nothing less than murder
Kennith F. Tawney, Madison

I sure do agree with a waiting period if more young and older women saw children at the various developmental stages you would have less abortions performed as a matter of convienence.
Roger Dewayne, Oceana

I think it should be outlawed in WV. I think its murder!
Christel Toler, Sissonville

There should be NO abortion! Abortion is the same as murder. Even though a child has not been born yet does not mean that it is not alive and to stop a life, or the potential life of some one not yet born, is murder.
Victor Coltey, Charleston WV

Children are the best thing that could ever happen to any parents. I have 4 boys and I would give anything if I could have more children, but I'm not able to.
Debbie Workman, Bloomingrose

It is about time that this issue is finally being addressed! Now if Roe Vs. Wade could be turned around, that would be phenominal.
Lori, Elkview

YES, yes, and yes! I think that any woman (regardless of age) should be shown pictures of the fetus in various stages and the various procedures for abortion. I also believe that a child - a person who is age 17 and younger - should have to notify their parent(s) that they are considering an abortion before they are allowed to have one.
Priscilla F. Milam, Griffithsville

To suggest that women have not thought about this decision before seeking an abortion is insulting. To force them to look at pictures of aborted fetuses on a state paid for website and then send them home for 24 hours to wait, defies logic. The bill does more than make women wait -- it may make their names public, and its key intention is to threaten doctors into refusing to provide abortions, or even information about abortions!
Cheri Heflin, Charleston

While on the surface, this seems reasonable it is in fact an on-going campaign to slowly limit access to abortion to the point where there will be no access. Women should not have to live in fear that the coat hangers we throw away now will have another use!
Lewis Wolfe, Parkersburg

I think every woman should see how an abortion is done & the results before they have it done to realize what they are really doing to the little human being they're told or think isn't a baby yet. Also show them the growth from conception to time of abortion-there is a developed human being with a beating heart & brain with feelings, etc. How can we ignore what we're doing? It's wrong.
V. Crosier, Scott Depot, WV

That's the least they should do. 7 days would be better and completely abolishing abortion would be best.
S. Hatcher, St. Albans

It should be illegal to have an abortion, except in cases of rape or major defect. 24 hours isn't long enough, I think they need to wait ooh say 9 months.Only God has the right to take a life, because He gave it. In the bible God says he knows us even in the womb and at the time of conception. An abortion is murder.
David Thomas,

I think no because it is bad to have an abortion. It is also bad to kill another human being.
Joey Wiseman, Danville

They should be required to wait until the child is born, then allow it to be adopted. The only exception should be that if the pregnant woman is in life-threatening medical danger because of the pregnancy.
Andie Kevins, Charleston

I think the best part of this bill is the web site. A lot of people don't realize just how early a fetus is actually a person. Many people claim the fetus isn't a person and abortion is not killing, but when the fetus can hear and has a heart beat and moves around, to me that makes a person...
Roxanne, Appleton

Women think about their decision to abort more than 24 hours before they even make an appointment. They struggle to decide to parent or not. Just because the father has an obligation does not mean he will choose to support the child. The Child advocate office will try to collect support but that could take years. I don't feel the government has any place in the women's right to reproductive freedom. This bill will only remove the women's freedom to choose. This bill only provides steep barriers to our freedom to choose.
Winfield

It should be nobody's decision but the woman's to say she would like to wait 24 hours to get an abortion. A woman's body is a woman's body and nobody should be able to tell her what to do. What's next dictatorship.
Autumn Cox

I strongly disagree with abortion anyways. Maybe if they see how their baby is alive and growing inside them they will think twice.
Tammy, Gallipolis Ferry

Absolutely. 24 hours more to think about it with literature to explain the consequences won't hurt any woman. Time for the liberal's to accept that.
Robert R. Coleman, Iaeger, WV

I think by the time a woman goes to a medical professional about getting an abortion, she has thought a great deal about it. It is not something any woman would take lightly. I think the resources being spent on the anti-abortion campaign would be better spent on medical and educational benefits for all those children who have been born to a life without hope.
Sofia Polishook

I say it is wise to wait 24 hours and then if you still feel compelled to abort this child, then do it. This choice is ultimately between the woman and God.
Sara Baisden, Pecks Mill, WV

I am extremly pro-choice, but I am for women thinking about their actions first. I think that some women may do one thing or another in the heat of the moment and then decide that the other method was the best. I think that the twenty-four hour waiting period would allow women to make a level headed decision. Pro-choice, yay!
William Smalley, South Charleston

This would keep women from making split second decisions on weather to have an abortion. It would give them at least 24 hours to think about the life that is growing inside of their body. It would give them time to maybe think things through.
Jamie Jones, Cottageville

Abortion is murder. Women's should always be counseled on the alternatives available to them to avoid this act that will comdem them for the rest of their lives. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.
Theresa, Milton

If a woman has been raped, then she has the right to an abortion immediatly. For the other women, they should have to use the 24 waiting period.
Christie, Amherstdale

Twenty four hours at least. If given 24 hours to think about it, I would guess there would be less bad decisions and regrets.
Shawna, Charleston

I think that there shouldn't be such a thing as abortion at all. If this passes, they are okaying murder! I know that if the fetus doesn't take a breath, it isn't considered living, but all the same it is! Everyone who has anything to do with and abortion and the doctors are murderers.
Angela Coleman, Elkhorn City

I don't beleive in abortion I think that when these women do that they are killing the babies. I Yes there should be a 24 hour waiting period cause maybe they would change there mind and not go through with it. I think that if they abort the babies that to me is no better than these people that actually kill these babies.
Laney Gal, Page

I believe a woman has the right to an abortion if she chooses; but I also think by giving her time to decide she might find an alternative. There are so many people wanting to adopt.
Shelia A Young, Elkview WV

I think it would be better if they would wait 24 hours so they could thank it over, because that give them time to reflect on, they can deal with it later on in life. Or is it right or is this wrong? Life is hard as it is, but there is choices we all got to make in life, i believe that it's the right to their own body, just that 24 hours can change one's life, forever. Use it wisely.
Faith A Stephens, Charleston

It is a life not a choice! Anything to stop the killing of these babies is a moving in the right dirrection.
Jack Rose, Culloden

Women already know her options, and it is her choice. Most women are usually stuck raising the children on their own anyway, so why should someone else be able to tell us we cannot have an abortion. If there is a 24 hour waiting period, it is not going to make a difference. If a woman wants an abortion she will get one. She may go out of state for it and get it done in one trip. The only thing the 24 hour wait will do is cause us to think of an excuse to be off work an extra day, or why we are leaving the house again.
Wonna B Unknown, Charleston

Yes, many women make a harsh dicision up to that point. So yes, I do think they should wait up to 24 four hours at least.
Tabatha Walkup, Whitesville

It is only reasonable that women and girls have access to ALL informaiton before they have an abortion. The decision to have an abortion is a serious. It is a precedure that can not be undone. This bill is good for women and girls!
Melissa Adkins, Summersville

I believe that it is a good idea. Issues such as this should not be rushed into. At least they can have that one last chance to think it over!
Nicole Nagy, Wellsburg, WV

Women and girls deserve to have factual information before making this life changing decision, especially if it contains information that would cause her to change her mind. If she finds out after she has an abortion, it is too late! This bill protects the girl from an abortionist who stands to gain financially from her decision. Why should he or she freely offer information that might mean the girl changes her mind about her abortion?
Karen Cross, Morgantown

This is a life and death, irreversible decision. It should not be made in haste or without all the facts. Every woman I have talked to that had an abortion, regrets it.
Diane Strippel, New Martinsville

It has been proven where there was information given, the abortion rate has dropped. Given the chance to see the development of the baby, the woman is given the knowledge that it isn't a 'blob of tissue' or 'product of conception'. Before any surgery, a doctor must explain the procedure with all side effects. This is not told the woman seeking an abortion.
Hilda Shorter, Sophia, W.Va.

Abortion is a terrible procedure, one that a young girl or lady will live with for the rest of their life. They ought to be told and given factual information regarding this terrible procedure.
George E. Wallace, Jr., Culloden, WV

I don't feel anyone has surgery or medical procedures performed without wanting to know their alternatives and risks involved, why should abortion be any different?
Becky Hunter, Union, WV
