BODIES IN TOWNHOME
Life in prison for man convicted of killing 4 at Ohio townhome in drug-related robbery

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Thursday, July 3, 2014 4:35 PM EDT
AKRON, Ohio

A judge has handed down four consecutive life sentences to a man convicted of killing four people in a crime rooted in Ohio's growing heroin epidemic.

Defendant Derrick Brantley had been convicted of aggravated murder in the April 2013 slayings of the young adults, who were shot in their heads during a drug-related robbery of an Akron townhome.

Summit County Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands on Thursday sentenced the 22-year-old Brantley to the consecutive terms of life with no chance of parole.

A jury earlier recommended against the death penalty.

Brantley's co-defendant, 22-year-old Deshanon Haywood, has pleaded not guilty and is set for trial later this month.

Prosecutors said the slayings could be traced to the state's heroin epidemic.
