Ohio man who blamed heroin addiction for deadly stabbing of his mother gets life sentence

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Monday, June 9, 2014 10:09 AM EDT

A northwestern Ohio man who pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing his mother has been sentenced to life prison.

Anthony Bertolina of Toledo will be eligible for parole after 30 years.

The 34-year-old was sentenced Monday in the December slaying of his mother, 56-year-old Mary Bertolina. The Blade in Toledo reports the life sentence was part of a plea deal.

Bertolina pleaded guilty to aggravated murder last month and told a judge that his heroin addiction led to the stabbing.

He says the addiction cost him his home and his job and that he began stealing from his mother.
