Ohio college joins national Operation Hat Trick program in effort to help students, veterans

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Sunday, May 25, 2014 5:13 AM EDT

A university in southwestern Ohio has joined with a national nonprofit group to sell co-branded sports caps with the proceeds supporting university scholarships and military veterans.

Miami University in Oxford says it has joined in the effort with Operation Hat Trick. The national group assists veterans with recovery, training and education.

The university says Operation Hat Trick began at the University of New Hampshire to memorialize two U.S. Navy SEALs lost in Iraq in 2008.

The original initiative focused on producing collegiate caps for soldiers with head injuries.

Miami says the program's focus and its roots in ice hockey country provided the inspiration for the group's name.

The program has since evolved into a national one with participation from more than 200 universities.
