Cleveland-area event to raise awareness of missing people, offer tools to help in such cases

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Sunday, May 25, 2014 3:11 AM EDT

Cuyahoga County is holding its first Missing Persons Day in downtown Cleveland.

Officials say the event is meant to raise awareness and generate tips in missing persons cases.

They also want to help people with loved ones who have disappeared.

The free event Sunday afternoon at Peace Officers Memorial Park will give visitors a chance to learn about tools that can help in missing person cases. Police will be available to talk about old and new cases.

Awareness of missing persons cases in the Cleveland area has grown in the past few years mainly because of cases involving convicted serial killer Anthony Sowell (SOH'-wehl) and kidnapper Ariel Castro.

It has been just over a year since three women escaped Castro's home after kept there close to a decade.
