DAUGHTER'S GRADUATION-CANCER
Ohio mom with late-stage cancer gets to see teenage daughter graduate in hospital ceremony

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Saturday, April 26, 2014 12:12 PM EDT
NEWARK, Ohio

An Ohio mother who has late-stage, inoperable cancer got to see her 17-year-old daughter's graduation in a special ceremony held in her hospital room.

Seventeen-year-old Evie Shumaker was supposed to graduate from Newark Digital Academy in central Ohio on May 31.

But when she told her teachers that her mom, 57-year-old Melissa Shumaker, had advanced pancreatic cancer, they decided to organize an impromptu graduation celebration on Monday.

The teen dressed in a cap and gown, "Pomp and Circumstance" was played on a cellphone and Shumaker saw school officials hand her daughter a diploma. Evie tells The Advocate (http://ohne.ws/1fegG1w ) that God has blessed her because she didn't think her mom would see her graduate.

Melissa Shumaker is in hospice care at Licking Memorial Hospital.
