Police say man was drunk when he hit and killed former Ohio police chief on highway

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Wednesday, February 12, 2014 6:10 AM EST
WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio

A grand jury will consider charges against a 22-year-old man who police say was drunk when he veered off an interstate highway in northeast Ohio and killed a former police chief who was changing a tire.

Police said Andrew Picha of Mayfield Heights was drunk and driving between 80 and 110 mph when he drove off Interstate 480 in suburban Cleveland on Feb. 2 and killed 64-year-old Lester Mitchell, a former police chief at Cleveland State University.

Picha was being held with a $50,000 bond on a preliminary charge of aggravated vehicular homicide. Other charges will be considered by the county grand jury. No attorney information was available.

Picha told police he swerved to avoid two people standing in the middle of the road before he crashed.
