Central Ohio man, 74, dies after falling through ice on pond; may have been following his dog

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Wednesday, February 12, 2014 5:31 AM EST
POWELL, Ohio

A 74-year-old central Ohio man who fell through the ice on a frozen pond has died.

Police said rescuers pulled Siegbert Allespach from a pond in a park Tuesday afternoon in Powell, north of Columbus. He died hours later at a hospital.

Rescuers were alerted to Allespach in the water by his frantically barking dog. No one saw him go in, but he might have been in the icy water for up to 25 minutes before he was rescued.

Authorities don't know why he was on the pond, but police said he might have been chasing his dog. The animal was not injured.
