Some Ohio cities that draw their drinking water from Lake Erie are spending a lot more money to treat the water because of toxins produced by algae blooms in the lake.
Officials in neighboring Ottawa County are considering a fee increase next year to cover the added expenses of testing and treating the water.
This comes after one township told its 2,000 residents not to drink or use the water coming from their taps because the amount of toxins spiked last month.
Algae blooms mainly in western Lake Erie during warm months have turned the water into a pea soup color in recent years.
