Critics question how some Ohio schools collect contributions from employees for levy campaigns

Critics are questioning the legality of some Ohio school districts paying for levy campaigns by deducting money from employees' paychecks.
An attorney with the Hamilton County-based group Citizens Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes argues the districts are violating state law. It bans using public funds on school levy campaigns and paying district workers for time spent on such activities.
But district officials defend the practice as legal. They say the time workers spend processing the donations is paid out of that money, not public funds, and the money collected is sent to a private levy support group.
At least one prosecutor's office is looking into the matter.
