Ohio nears decision on new lethal injection drug following expiration of executions supply

Ohio is due to announce a new lethal injection drug now that the drug used most recently has expired.
The state used its last dose of the powerful sedative pentobarbital in the Sept. 15 execution of Harry Mitts Jr. Additional supplies aren't available because the drug's manufacturer has put it off limits for use in executions.
The state's options include securing pentobarbital through what are called compounding pharmacies, where pharmacists mix individual doses for the state.
The expected announcement also could include new rules for monitoring condemned inmates in their final days, following the suicide of an inmate in August days before his scheduled execution.
