Computer Upgrades
If you know your computer isn't performing up to par, you can replace it. But that could be expensive. A simple upgrade may be enough to get your computer back up to speed in no time. We have some advice from PC World magazine that might help you figure out which is right for your P.C.
Upgrade or Out?
New system needed?
Grace Aquino with PC World magazine says if your system is more than three years old, it may be smartest to replace the system. That's because the old system may not be compatible with many of the new upgrades or technology you may want to use for future projects.
Upgrade Issues
Before you can upgrade, you need to figure out exactly what you want your system to do. According to Aquino, an upgrade will work, "If you want to expand the storage capability, or if you just want to add or enrich your audio and visual experience".
>>Speed up performance
You might want to consider replacing your CPU, or Central Processing Unit, or just buy more memory. Memory modules typically run anywhere from 20 to 100 dollars.
>>More storage
If you need more storage space, figure out what kind of RAM your computer has. Just check your manual or ask the computer vendor. Once you figure out what kind of RAM you have, you can buy a few more RAM modules in the store and replace them (either on your own or by a technician -- often someone from the store).
>>Gaming
If you want to play the latest 3-D games on the market, just buy a graphics card. You can easily input that into the slot on your computer -- provided there is a slot on your computer. If not, you will need to upgrade to an entirely new computer to play.
If it comes down to buying a new computer, picking what you need can leave you dizzy. There are all kinds of systems to fit every need, and the costs can vary by thousands of dollars. Do you need to spend top dollar to get a good system? Rod Scher with Smart Computing magazine says absolutely not. The deciding factor will be how the computer will be used.
Computer Uses
Basic system
If you need the computer for spreadsheets, word processing, or playing cd's, you can buy a system for under a thousand dollars and be set. Student computer
If you're looking for something for your child, their age might help dictate usage. A young child can go with a minimal system, while older children off in college may need a laptop to take to classes. A laptop will most likely cost double the price of a desktop system. Gaming system
If you, or someone in your house is a gamer, prepare to spend extra money. Games require a system with more memory or bigger central processing units, along with video cards. The systems that run under a thousand dollars most likely will not do the job necessary for many games. Bright Idea! Take into consideration whether the system you're buying can be upgraded later. That will allow you to expand the machine as needed, instead of having to replace it entirely.
If you already have a computer and find yourself frustrated by crashes, what should you do? Your first reaction may be to call the repairman. But, professional help can be costly. So, how can you fix the problem on your own? "You want to learn to be familiar with the computer, understand its components. Don't be afraid, you know, to read the manual, see how things connect. Don't be afraid to work with it," says computer specialist Brent Myhand.
Quick Fixes
Check your plugs. "Make sure the keyboard is plugged into the keyboard port, not the mouse port," says Myhand.
If you're not getting any power, check your wall outlet. For example, try plugging a lamp in the same outlet, see if it works.
If you hear funny sounds, check the fans inside the computer. If one of the fans is broken, it will cause the computer to overheat.
Make sure to keep your computer clean. It's always a good idea to periodically open the computer case and used compressed air to blow out the dust.
If you decide to download anything, make sure it's compatible with the software that's already there. "It's always good to do a little bit of homework on what you're going to install before you install it," says Myhand.
If you get really stumped, take advantage of the Web. Some sites offer free help, like PCWorld.com and ZDNet.com.
