Free Internet Service
The offers for free Internet service are everywhere you look these days. But, you need to be careful. The Federal Trade Commission says you may end up paying more for so-called free service than you think. There are some things to consider before you sign up for service.
ISP Info. Local? -- Check to make sure the number you must use to dial up for service is local. That way, you don't end up paying for expensive long distance calls every time you log on. Term Length -- How long will the "free" service last. Often, the service may only last a short period of time, but obligate the user to pay for service for a much longer period at a rate higher than was otherwise thought. Renewal -- Find out if you'll be automatically re-enrolled after a certain period of time. Will you be charged during the renewal period? Cancellation? -- How do you get out of the agreement when you want? Few providers let you out with a simple phone call. Some require a registered letter.
Look for the disclosure in the service agreement. This information should be easy to find. If not, the Federal Trade Commission advises you to be cautious. The disclosure agreement will let you know whether your online information is being tracked or shared with an outside source.
If you want to know more about a service, you can refer to websites like www.freedomlist.com or www.all-free-isp.com.
You not only have the option of free service on the web. You also can download programs that won't cost you a thing--if you're careful. Look carefully because many are free, while others allow a trial period, and some cost money from the start. Here's the breakdown:
Download Data
Freeware -- These programs can be downloaded for free, and can be used for an unlimited amount of time at no charge. Shareware -- You can download these programs either for a trial period, or for a fee. The trial period typically lasts about 30 days and is a good way to be sure you want to pay for the program. The fee can range from 10 dollars to 150 dollars. Bright Idea! Read the full disclosure on each program. The disclosure will tell you what the program might cost, the length of the trial period, if any, information the vendor may collect about you, and whether the program will require certain operating systems. If you don't have the right equipment, the download may cause your computer to crash.
