How Much is that Doggie in the Window?
Thinking about getting a pet? Sure, animals can be great companions, but are you also considering how much a dog or cat will cost over the years? Stephen Zawistowski, from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) says cost is one of the top five reasons for giving up a pet.
But, the ASPCA says there are some ways to keep your bills down:
Pick the Right Pet
Choosing the right dog or cat for your budget can make a big difference.
>>Cats are smaller than dogs and eat less food.
>>Large dogs are much more expensive than small ones because veterinary care is more expensive.
>>Longhaired dogs need regular grooming, which can really add up.
Where to Buy
Instead of heading to the store, pick up your pet at an animal shelter. Not only is it much cheaper, but some initial healthcare may also be included or offered at discount.
Toys
You can also save some money when it comes to toys. "People will sell you an enormous number of different things to play with your pet. But your pet really wants to play with you," says Zawistowski. So, simply throwing around a tennis ball will generally do the trick.
Healthy Pets
Keep your pet in good shape to avoid unnecessary health problems. Regular exercise can prevent problems like obesity.
Bright Idea...
One place to never skimp is on vet visits. Preventative care can help avoid the major costs of illness and injuries down the road.
