OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING
Officials: Rifle-wielding man who was shot at Germantown park was Iraq war veteran

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Thursday, July 17, 2014 7:07 PM EDT
MEMPHIS, Tenn.

Officials say an Iraq war veteran who was fatally shot by police at a West Tennessee park had sought care at the Memphis VA Medical Center.

Police in the Memphis suburb of Germantown say 24-year-old Justin Neil Davis was holding a rifle when he was shot by three officers in a park on Tuesday night. Police said they had received a message from authorities in neighboring Fayette County that Davis was armed and dangerous and possibly suicidal before he was found in a vehicle at the park.

Military officials say Davis had been a private in the Kentucky Army National Guard. Officials said he served in Iraq as a vehicle mechanic in 2010.

Memphis VA spokeswoman Willie Logan said Davis was being seen at the hospital for an undisclosed reason.
