High snow removal costs in Kentucky this winter leave less money for other road maintenance

Snow removal costs were up significantly in Kentucky this winter, leaving less money for other road maintenance projects.
Deputy State Highway Engineer Nancy Albright told the legislature's interim Transportation Committee that because snow and ice removal costs were high, the state has had to cut back on some other maintenance activities. Those include tree and brush removal, lighting and signal improvements, and the machine-patching of potholes.
Although snow and ice removal costs were higher than normal in 2014, they were not as high as 2011, when the state spent nearly $77 million to clear the highways.
