MINE SAFETY
Mining stakeholders to discuss rise in fatalities, 9 at metal, nonmetal mines since Jan. 1

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Monday, May 5, 2014 2:02 AM EDT
ARLINGTON, Va.

Mine industry stakeholders are meeting in Arlington to discuss an increase in metal and nonmetal mining fatalities.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration says nine workers have been killed on the job this year. There were 22 fatalities in 2013, including nine in the fourth quarter.

The agency says Monday's summit will address the causes of these fatalities, identify actions needed to prevent them and work to reverse the trend.

Metal and nonmetal mining is divided into four broad categories: metal, nonmetal, stone, and sand and gravel. These operations produce about 80 different commodities.

The meeting will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the agency's headquarters.
